This is a phrase that I live by in many areas of my life and found it to be true itself. Much of accounting and finance is about knowing and communicating the truth. It’s one of my core values is telling the truth to my clients and making sure that they have reports that tell them the truth. As you may have guessed already from my language my passion and my purpose is for helping businesses optimize their profitability. I use that word optimized purposely, it’s not maximized because maximum profitability isn’t always a good thing. We do speak in terms of optimizing profitability to make sure that your meeting, the company is meeting its goals. The owner is meeting his or her goals for running that business. I am a firm believer that there’s no reason to settle for low profitability, especially given the risks that are inherent in the landscape industry. Risks like the labor risk. The higher the risk the higher the reward should be. I’ve been working in the landscape industry for more than 10 years. I’ve had clients ranging from 2 million to 30 plus million with those clients I take a blended approach – sometimes it looks like a CFO, sometimes it looks like a COO, sometimes it looks like a coach, sometimes it looks like a consultant. Prior to starting the Herring Group in 2001, I was a CFO for a couple of companies including a publicly traded company. I got a great compliment from a client he said, “Greg one thing that I like about you is that you don’t just tell me what to do. You actually do stuff that helps me.” I actually help get things done for my clients.
