Trump admin to repeal limits on religious adoption groups

STILL MOVING FORWARD. SHANNON?>>Shannon: ANITA, THANK YOU. NEWLY PROPOSED REGULATIONS FROM THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS SET TO END OF THE OBAMA ERA POLICIES RESTRICTING SOME FEDERAL FUNDS FROM BLOWING TO SOME FAITH-BASED ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE GROUPS. IT’S A MOVE THAT MANY RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS SAY IS LONG OVERDUE BUT PROGRESSIVES ARGUE THAT THE ADMINISTRATION IS NOW LEGALIZING AND ENDORSING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY. EDITOR KATHY REW AND “THE DAILY CALLER” VIDEO COLUMNIST STEPHANIE HAMEL. GREAT TO HAVE YOU BOTH WITH US TONIGHT. SO WHAT THIS ESSENTIALLY EQUATES TO IS THERE WAS A REGULATION THAT SAID MONEY COULDN’T FLOW TOO FOR INSTANCE CATHOLIC CHARITY GROUPS WHICH HAVE ADOPTION AGENCIES AND THEY SAY WE PREFER TO PLACE OUR CHILDREN WHO SHARE OUR CATHOLIC FAITH OR SHARE IN TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE. I TALKED TO AN ATTORNEY WHO WAS INVOLVED WITH THIS AND HE SAID THEY’VE NEVER HAD A SAME-SEX COUPLE COME TO THEM BUT THEY ARE BEING SUED OVER THIS. THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAYS THEY ARE TRYING TO HELP OUT ON THAT FRONT.>>THEY ARE MOVING FORWARD ON THIS, AND I TALK ABOUT THIS QUITE A BIT. IT LOOKS LIKE THERE ARE SO MANY ATTACKS COMING FROM THE ATTACKS ON RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS ESPECIALLY CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATIONS. AND IF YOU LOOK AT THIS, CHARITY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR RELIGIOUS VIEWS AND BELIEFS AND PUTTING THAT BEFORE HELPING THE NIDA COMIC AND NEEDY. YOU POINTED OUT, THIS CHARITY IS BEING SUED OVER SOMETHING THAT IT NEVER EVEN ENCOUNTERED. SO I DO THINK THAT PEOPLE SHOULDN’T BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BUT ALSO OUR RELIGIOUS PEOPLE SHOULD BE PROTECTED.>>Shannon: AND TONY PERKINS SAID THIS. THE NEED FOR THE ACTION IS UNFORTUNATELY EVIDENT AS VARIOUS STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HAVE CAMPELL THE TRAMPLED UPON VARIOUS AMENDMENTS FORCING THE FAITH-BASED ADOPTION TO LEAVE THEIR FAITH AT THE DOOR.>>I ACTUALLY WORKED AS A SENIOR ADVISOR FOR HHS SO YOU ACTUALLY — I AM A RAISED CATHOLIC AND YOU NEED TO PUT THE NEED FOR THE NEEDY IN FRONT OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS WHEN IT COMES TO THESE ISSUES. THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN AND THE NEEDY HAVE TO COME FIRST. THEN, OUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS NEED TO COME SECOND. SO I REALLY FEEL THAT THEY ARE BEING SUED BECAUSE IF THEY DO TURN AWAY A FAMILY THAT DOES NOT FIT THE RELIGIOUS NEEDS, THOSE CHILDREN WILL GO WITHOUT. SO IF A FAMILY DOES COME IT WANTS TO ADOPT AND TAKE CARE AND FOSTER CHILDREN, THEY CANNOT. SO THIS IS IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE NEEDY ARE NOT LEFT OUT. RELIGION HAS TO BE SET ASIDE TO HELP THE NEEDY IN OUR COUNTRY. AND I AM A RELIGIOUS PERSON AND I SAY THAT.>>Shannon: SO JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMATION. THE ATTORNEY I TALKED TO SAID THEY’VE NEVER HAD ANYBODY COME TO THEM WITH THIS BUT THERE ARE MANY OTHER AGENCIES IN TOWN THAT DO AND HE SAID WE WOULD JUST REFER SAME-SEX COUPLES. THE ACLU IS SAYING RELIGIOUS LIBERTY IS NOT A LICENSE TO DISCRIMINATE. THE NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM MUST COME FIRST AND THAT’S THE ARGUMENT KATHY IS MAKING.>>IT’S A FAIR ARGUMENT BUT THIS OBAMA ERA RULE DIDN’T HELP ANY OF THE 450,000 CHILDREN IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM. INSTEAD IT ACTUALLY HURT THEM BECAUSE A LOT OF THESE CATHOLIC ORGANIZATIONS AND FOSTER CARE ORGANIZATIONS HAD TO SHUT DOWN BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE FUNDS TO KEEP GOING AND THEY COULDN’T FIGHT THE LAWSUITS. SO NO CHILDREN WERE ADOPTED THROUGH THOSE MEANS. BY THE WAY, LGBT COUPLES COULD STILL ADOPT CHILDREN BECAUSE THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THEY COULD GO TO. SO I SEE PEOPLE TRYING TO FIND A PROBLEM IN AN AREA WHERE THERE WASN’T A PROBLEM.>>Shannon: VERY QUICKLY BEFORE WE GET CUT OFF, FINAL WORD.>>IT WAS THEIR CHOICE. THEY TURNED AWAY THOSE KNEE-DEEP BECAUSE OF THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. SO THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THOSE KIDS NOT BEING HELPED OR THE NEEDY NOT BEING HELPED. IT WAS A ORGANIZATION OF THAT.
