‘This is going to be difficult’: Businesses struggle with news of hospital closure

HAVE QUESTIONS, 800-846-9013. NORTHSIDE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF YOUNGSTOWN, BUT RIGHT UP THE STREET, THOUGH NOT AVENUE — BELMONT AVENUE. A GREAT PLACE TO DO SOME SHOPPING, GET SOME THINGS THEY NEED. THERE IS A BUSINESS IMPACT AND YOU ARE TELLING US ABOUT IT TODAY. ABSOLUTELY, I WAS TELLING THEM. I TOLD HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME, THEY DID NOT EVEN KNOW BEFORE I TOLD HIM. SO BUSINESS OWNERS, THEY WERE SHOCKED AND DISAPPOINTED, BUT THEY SAID IT IS SOMETHING THEY WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH. OMG. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. BECAME AS A SHOCK TO BUSINESS OWNERS. NORTHSIDE HOSPITAL CLOSING MEANS LESS CUSTOMERS. NOT JUST THE HOSPITAL, EMPLOYEES. IT IS ALSO THE PATIENTS THAT GO FOR OUTPATIENT TREATMENT, AND RIGHT AFTER THEY WOULD COME HERE AND HAVE BREAKFAST OR LUNCH. THE DOCTORS OFFICES WHO WOULD ORDER LUNCH. JACK SAYS THAT BELMONT AVENUE WAS ON THE RISE. A LOT OF NEW PLACES OPENED UP IN LIBERTY, WE HAVE A RESTAURANT NEXT DOOR THAT JUST OPENED, WE ARE GETTING RALLIES DOWN THE STREET. MORE AND MORE OF THE VACANT BUILDINGS ARE BEING UTILIZED, AND A THIS IS GOING TO BE DIFFICULT. DIFFICULT, BUT ACCORDING TO FRANK OF JIMMY’S, NOT IMPOSSIBLE. WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH SOME TOUGH SCENARIOS. WE HAVE LOST BIGGER COMPANIES AND WE HAVE ALWAYS MADE IT THROUGH. HE SAYS LIBERTY BUSINESSES ARE RESILIENT AND CUSTOMERS ARE A BIG PART OF THAT. PART OF OUR SUCCESS COMES FROM NOT ONLY THE LOCAL BUSINESSES, BUT FROM OUR LOCAL, OUR LOCAL CLIENTELE FROM THE PERSON THAT LIVES DOWN THE STREET WHO COMES ONCE A DAY, OR ONE ROLE. HE SAYS THOSE CUSTOMERS WILL GET THEM TO TIMES LIKE THESE — THROUGH TIMES LIKE THESE. BOTH BUSINESS OWNERS SAY THAT THEY HOPE ANOTHER BUSINESS WILL TAKE THE HOSPITAL’S PLACE. TIME WILL TELL.
