Thank you to donors: Koen Johannes Henricus Verrijt, Fellowship Recipient

[Music] I am Koen Verrijt, and I’m a first-year
grad student in material science, and I’m the recipient of the
Bill and Triana Silliman Fellowship. The main goal of my research
project is to understand how the microstructure influences the transport of oxygen inside. I’m currently
developing an experimental setup that’ll be used to study the oxidation behavior
of ceramic matrix composites. To be specific, silicon carbide, and this
material is often used in, for example, jet turbines but also in disc brake. We’re
looking at jet engines, for example, a higher temperature limit means that
efficiency can be increased. So, this means the jet engine is more sustainable,
which is better for the environment of course. For me personally, sustainability
is important. With the research I’m doing, I can have at least a small impact on
that. As I’m a foreign student—I’m from the Netherlands—this fellowship means
a lot to me because without this fellowship, it would not have been
possible for me financially, especially to pursue graduate school here in the
United States. Thank you very much, Bill and Triana Silliman.
I’m really truly thankful for receiving this fellowship, and I’m also
very honored to be part of this prestigious department. [music]
