Sunday Business Page: Point Park Launches Career-Readiness Center

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER SPECIAL SEGMENT OF THE SUNDAY BUSINESS PAGE. OUR SPECIAL GUEST IS DR. PAUL HENNIGAN RESIDENT OF PARK PAUL UNIVERSITY. THEY LAUNCHED ITS NEW PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND READINESS CENTER TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH SOMETHING CALLED EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING. WE WELCOME PAUL HENNIGAN TO KATIE KA TO EXPLAIN EXACTLY WHAT THAT IS. NICE TO HAVE YOU HERE. GOOD TO BE HERE. WHAT IS THIS READINESS? WE HAVE STARTED A COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM. THAT IS FOR QUALIFIED JUNIORS AND SENIORS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK 15 WEEKS FULL TIME EARNING ENTRY-LEVEL WAGES AT A COMPANY WHERE THEY THINK THEY WOULD LIKE TO WORK FOR THEIR CAREER. THEY DO THAT WHILE THEY ARE STILL IN SCHOOL. THERE ACTUALLY WORKING FULLY EMPLOYED BUT GETTING ACADEMIC CRITIC FOR DOING SO. IS THIS UNIQUE? IT’S REALLY UNIQUE. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE U.S. THAT HAVE THEM. THERE ARE NOT MANY IN THE REGION. THE ONLY OTHER, PERSIAN RUG IN THE REGION IS THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH. IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE AT POINT PARK STUDENTS, WHAT FIELDS THEY CAN WORK IN WHILE ALSO GETTING ACADEMIC CREDIT? WE STARTED WITH THE ROLLING SCHOOL OF BUSINESS. NOW THAT WE HAVE COMPLETED A THREE-YEAR PILOT WITH 50 STUDENTS, WE ARE EXPANDING IT TO THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY. EVERY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AT POINT PARK UNIVERSITY HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO QUALIFY FOR A CO- OP PROGRAM. YOU HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT YOU OFFER. WE THINK OF YOU A LOT IN THE ARTS AREA FOR EXAMPLE. DOES THAT MEAN AN ARTIST AND SOMEONE TRAINING TO BE AN ARTISTIC ENDEAVOR OF SOME SORT CAN GO WORK FOR ONE OF THE THEATERS. AS A MATTER FACT MANY STUDENTS HAVE BEEN DOING THAT FOR YEARS. WORKING SUMMER STOCK IN A LOT OF CASES. THIS IS ACTUALLY PROVIDING STUDENTS IN AREAS THAT TYPICALLY HAVE NOT HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY. SUCH AS BUSINESS, COMMUNICATIONS, MARKETING AND PSYCHOLOGY. SOMEBODY COULD COME HERE AND WORK HERE AND GET ACADEMIC CREDIT. YOU HAVE CO-OP STUDENTS. IT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT PROGRAM. ANYBODY AT POINT PARK, A STUDENT IS ELIGIBLE. UNDERGRADUATE HAVE TO QUALIFY. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF COURSES THAT STUDENTS NEED TO TAKE. THERE IS A VETTING PROCESS THROUGH INTERVIEWS, DEVELOPING A RESUME AND INTERVIEW SKILLS. ONCE THE QUALIFY THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE CO-OP. AND THE IDEA HOW THE STUDENTS ARE REACTING? I KNOW WE ARE GETTING STARTED. STUDENTS ARE THRILLED. WE HAVE HAD 50 STUDENTS GO TO THE PROGRAM OF THE ONES WHO HAVE GRADUATED. SOME ARE STILL IN SCHOOL. OF THE ONES WHO HAVE GRADUATED ALL OF THEM ARE FULLY EMPLOYED NOW. THEY LOVE THE PROGRAM. IF YOU GET A FULL-TIME JOB AFTER SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THIS ALL THE CREDIT TO YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING IN AND EXPLAINING THIS. WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT. WE THANK YOU FOR JOINING US ON THIS EDITION OF THE SUNDAY BUSINESS PAGE. PLEASE WRITE TO ME IF YOU HAVE
