Small businesses fear minimum wage hikes

NEIL: THE MINIMUM WAGE IS UP, UP AND AWAY BUT IT MAY BE FORCING ONE BUSINESS TO CHARGE 20 BUCKS FOR A BURGER BECAUSE THE COST OF KEEPING THE HELP IS GETTING OUT OF CONTROL. ROBERT GRAY IS IN EMORYVILLE, CALIFORNIA WITH THAT STORY. REPORTER: WE ARE DOWN THE STREET FROM PIXAR STUDIOS. THIS IS A VERY SMALL CITY, 2.1 SQUARE MILES, ABOUT 12,000 RESIDENTS HERE. WE ARE DEFINITELY SEEING THIS PLAY OUT, THE BALANCE BETWEEN PAYING WORKERS MORE IN A VERY HIGH COST OF LIVING CITY WITH SMALL BUSINESSES, 55 OR FEWER EMPLOYEES, IN THIS CASE, IN KEEPING THEIR PROFIT MARGINS HEALTHY ENOUGH TO KEEP SUSTAINING ITSELF. YOU ARE LOOKING AT AN AREA WHERE WE KNOW HOUSING IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, UTILITIES ARE, AND SO IS FOOD AS WELL. IN FACT, THE HIGHEST MINIMUM WAGE AFTER JULY 1st WENT UP TO $16.30 AN HOUR, MORE THAN TWICE THE FEDERAL NUMBER AND TWO BUCKS HIGHER THAN CALIFORNIA AS WELL AT $15 AN HOUR. THE DEMAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE HIGHEST MINIMUM WAGE CLEARLY HELPS THE EMPLOYEES WHO ARE MAKING IT BUT IT COULD LEAD TO LAYOFFS AND FEWER HOURS. THAT IS THE JUGGLING ACT GOING ON RIGHT NOW AS PEOPLE ARE ADJUSTING. IT’S HITTING RESTAURANTS PARTICULARLY HARD BECAUSE THEY HAVE NARROW PROFIT MARGINS. TIPPED EMPLOYEES IN CALIFORNIA CANNOT MAKE LESS THAN THE MINIMUM WAGE. IN MOST OTHER STATES, THEY K IN MOST OTHER STATES, THEY CAN. RESTAURANT OWNERS SAY THEY DEFINITELY SUPPORT PAYING THEIR WORKERS MORE BUT ARE CONCERNED THE NEW LAW COULD DIG INTO THEIR PROFIT MARGIN AND THAT MAY FORCE THEM TO RAISE PRICES.>>WE CONTINUE TO GO UP AND UP AND UP AND THE CHEESEBURGER THAT WAS $13 TODAY IS $20 IN TWO YEARS, I’M NOT SURE ALL THAT TRANSLATES INTO OUR REVENUE ON A MONTHLY BASIS. WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE PRICE SENSITIVE. REPORTER: AS I MENTIONED, IT’S A VERY SMALL FOOTPRINT. IN A COUPLE MINUTES’ TIME YOU COULD BE IN OAKLAND OR BERKELEY. CUSTOMERS CAN CHOOSE TO GO ELSEWHERE IF PRICES GO TOO HIGH. THE CITY COUNCIL ORIGINALLY PASSED A PAUSE IN THE HIKE FROM $15 TO $16.30 FOR RESTAURANTS, THEN THEY OVERTURNED THAT. THEY WERE GOING TO GIVE THEM TIME TO ADJUST. THAT’S SINCE BEEN OVERTURNED. AND THE MINIMUM WAGE COULD GO EVEN HIGHER NEXT YEAR. IT’S INDEXED TO THE LOCAL CPI, IF YOU WILL. ONE OWNER TOLD ME HE’S TOO BUSY RUNNING HIS BUSINESS TO KEEP UP WITH THAT. THE LAST THING I WILL SAY, THEY WOULD LIKE A LITTLE HELP FROM THE TAX MAN.

  1. The federal government shouldn't interfere in something that is between the employer and employee.
Along with a lot of other things.

  2. And this is why most people are going to be replaced by machines and AI. Sucks but there’s no real solution to help EVERYONE

  3. Went to jack in the box today. They had machines taking my order instead of employess. Actually worked a lot better than employess. Pretty cool

  4. This has become a fact. Yet many still don't denounce NAFTA. Even a little, big eared war hero, self made billionaire could have predicted this if NAFTA passed. OH, one did. My bad.

  5. Fearing higher wages … is like fearing you could charge higher prices bc your customers earn more … isn't this how capitalism is supposed to work!?

  6. Home town is shutting down due to High Lease (rent), cost housing is to much if u cut cost of housing, u put that $ into the economy now high rent and mortgage down the toilet.

  7. Again for the knuckleheads out there. Minimum wages are not supposed to be a living wage. They are for kids who are just starting out. Learning a work ethic and the value of earning a little money. You get a living wage by hard work and proving your worth .
Democrats always want to give everything away. The only way to get votes. They always love to give away money earned by hard working taxpayers. Never their own money. Way too many make a career as a politician living like royalty on the backs of the American people. Never owning or running a business. Hell many have never had a real job. Pathetic losers. All of them.

  8. What do conservatives think is the right number and time to increase the minimum wage? or do you not believe in one at all?

  9. Why would I pay $20 for a burger?
Making one at home is cheaper and tastes better. I already refuse to go to fast food when I see $8 for a "value meal".

  10. You're against anything for the poor, workers must work for nothing, where and how those employees eat and live, they're already on the streets.

  11. Business have been taking advance of workers, for years. A lot of car dealerships, take advantage of its employees also

  12. Commie Core has failed our young people and didn't teach them Business and Economics in Jr. High and High School. Otherwise, they would have understood COST OF GOODS! And it's a Socialist LIE to make all boats rise! You get a minimum wage hike and the cost of everything HAS TO GO UP, so the cost of living goes up and you are right back where you started from! Do you know who ACTUALLY LOSES? The WORKING POOR! Why? Because some of them qualify for food stamps or housing assistance but the Cost of Living Increases aren't counted for almost a year! So you are always a year behind!

With the poor crops across the globe, we are going to have price increases, but add these wage hikes and you are talking about a disaster getting ready to hit!

  13. In many states the minimum wage has not raised in over ten years but all these businesses keep raising prices. The businesses will raise prices anyways, this saying is just a a softener to excuse them raising the prices less low key.

  14. cant wait until the government feels like they need to step in to pass a law that forces patrons to HAVE to pay $30 for a burger, that way we can keep the restaurants profitable. Might as will pass another law that ALL citizens are REQUIRED to eat out 4 nights a week, and imprisoned if they dont.

  15. THANK YOU MARK LEVINE FOR YOUR EXPOSING THE DEMOCRAT AGENDA TODAY ON YOUR RADIO SHOW
THANK YOU FOR BEING A WATCHMAN ON THE WALL FOR AMERICA !

  16. Its California! Democrats at work. More-so socialism. $13.50 to $20.00 for a cheeseburger?
Good grief: A double 1/2 pound maxi burger in most places is ~ $6.99 Never did like California.
Arrogant people and they think they are better than anyone else. Sorry for the profiling, but it
is the biggest example of what democrats do to otherwise good people. :-/

  17. It's always about the business, but the hell with the working man who can't make it on minimum wage… pay 15 hour you greedy son of bitches @ business! Now business say it will hurt them with paying 15 an hour welcome to what the struggling people have been experiencing for years now it's time for you to experience that @ business..

  18. People forget that Small Businesses(mom and pop) are the Majority! They cant afford topay a $15+ wage. When people hear wage increase they only think about big corporations who can afford that. Not the small average American business. So glad my business is not in California or any Expensive state with a high minimum wage. Id have to let people go or just not hire anyone.

  19. a business owner said: now the higher paid ppl want a raise too since their job earns more for the company. but the income is still the same.

  20. Another example of Leftist hypocrisy; they chant at the top of their lungs for $15 minimum wage and at the same time they are price sensitive and don't want to deal with the consequences. Virtue signaling pieces of 💩

  21. Different countries have different minimum wages each country should be tariffed according to their economy to make their products price equivalent to American products, this would drive up American products and force better products to be release as other countries will have to beat the American products by quality since tariffs will eliminate all the other countries cheap products advantage cause they are not forced to pay workers $15 per hour!

  22. "Workers earning minimum wage barely qualify for welfare programs like food stamps and Medicaid and low income housing. Even a small increase in the income will disqualify them for assistance . Then they quickly figure out it makes no sense to work if it means losing all the welfare. DEMOCRATS are stupid.

  23. They fear the minimum wage hike after already not being obliged to provide health care anymore… Just make us peasants and address our bosses as "my Lord" a tax bracket minimum for income of small business should solve this .

  24. My son lives in NYC, they’ve already raised minimum wage to $15 an hour. He works in the restaurant business and it’s cutting hours or jobs.

  25. That impact is from squad 4 of Democrats uneconomics. No surprise of loosing jobs as it effects the the business budget and negativity.
So does also Fox cuts out staff? It's good to remove berrys and avocados got used to pealed bananas and stealing Propreitory Information. I cut them OUT.
    Outnumbered.

  26. Fake economic. More people having money means more customers. Think of this if the minimum wage went down would that be good ?

  27. It's not small businesses that fears it, it's big business that fears it. The ones who get multi-billion-dollar corporate welfare handouts and trillion-dollar bailouts at the taxpayer expense, while they funnel off their profits to tax-free, off-shore, numbered back accounts. That's who fears it.

  28. Minimum wage goes up…taxes goes up…prices go up…back to square one again…taxes and over regulation is what drives the cost of living through the roof. (Tax and spend liberal democrats ruin cities…)

  30. I think that if you believe the true minimum wage is $0.00 then you believe labor is an inherently free commodity that has no cost to produce for a laborer and payment is based solely on whether or not whoever you worked for deems you worthy of payment. I think that's wrong but I'd be willing to hear out someone from that side on why they personally believe what they believe. But who I really want to hear from, is any business owner who opposes the $15.00 an hour minimum and thinks $15, or any livable wage is an arbitrary wage that "some labor may not just be worth." What I really want to know is how you've determined there's such a thing as labor that's worth more than $7.25 an hour (the federal minimum), or $15.00. What went into the calculation? Did you base it off of productivity? If so how did you quantify the data? I'm legitimately curious as to how this works. If you claim the left doesn't understand economics and doesn't understand why livable wages for all work is impossible then help us out. Enlighten us. Here I am asking.
