Showcase Fall 2015 Feature: Dane Shumak: Business Administration Graduate

So when I was in first year university I joined
up with the Anne Shirley Theatre company sort of by accident. I had sort of been concerned
by the time commitment and all of that sort of stuff and doing acting while being involved
in school so I almost didn’t go to my call back for my audition but I decided to stick
it out and the next year I started to run the company and the year after that I actually
took it over. So I am sort of glad that I did that and ASTC has been the largest part
of what has defined my university experience it has really changed me for the better ASTC
is what introduced me to theatre and to all of these incredible things I like to do. It
introduced me to the Peterborough community in a way that I wouldn’t have been able to
do otherwise. What led me to starting up my own company was, I started working with ASTC
and I took it over as the president and at the same time that I was also directing Spring
Awakening which is still the most successful show on record with ASTC and I really enjoyed
that and I sort of I had an idea to do a show called The Last Five Years which is a two
person musical just with two actors and a couple musicians and that’s really it. It
was too small to do with the Anne Shirley Theatre Company it was much too small to do
with any community theatre in Peterborough and I really really wanted to do a show so
I went why not do this myself. So I just sort of took a leap of faith and I got start up
funding from a whole bunch of different places, I got started up funding from theatre Trent
from ASTC from a few places around the university and from some great local downtown businesses.
I just sort of took a leap of faith and started my own company and now a year and a half later
our budget has quintupled and we’re potentially doing a show in Toronto so it was really a
great experience
