Queen Royal – Operation Ritz anniversary: Moment Prince Charles and Camilla CONFIRMED royal romance

Operation Ritz saw Charles and Camilla, now the Duchess of Cornwall, reveal themselves as a couple after years of secrecy The pair were photographed leaving London’s Ritz Hotel just before midnight on January 28 1999  The moment – which was over in seconds – was a major milestone for Charles and his long-term love Camilla  Following the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997, the pair had avoided being seen together in public  But the appearance outside the Ritz finally confirmed Charles’s romance with his former mistress was official  Hundreds of photographers gathered outside the famous London hotel to capture the event  Charles emerged first, with Camilla close behind and the couple walked down the steps of the hotel to their waiting Vauxhall Omega  They had attended a 50th birthday party for Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot. The moment was part of a PR campaign masterminded by Charles’s spin doctor, Mark Bolland  Mr Bolland was faced with the task of persuading the public to accept Camilla, who had been largely blamed for the breakdown of Charles’s marriage to Diana  In 2000, the Queen recognised Charles and Camilla’s relationship by attending a birthday lunch for King Constantine with Camilla present  And a year later, the couple shared their first public kiss at a party thrown to support the National Osteoporosis Society  Charles and Camilla – who first fell in love in the early 1970s – finally wed in 2005 at the Guildhall in Windsor, with Camilla becoming the Duchess of Cornwall  And since then Camilla has established herself within the royal family, taking on charity work, completing royal engagements and supporting Charles  When the pair wed, royal aides insisted that Camilla would be known as Princess Consort, instead of Queen Consort, when Charles becomes king  But any mention of Camilla becoming Princess Consort was removed from Clarence House’s website in 2018 and she will become Queen Consort when Charles takes to the throne unless there is a change in the law
