National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship Program Webinar

>>GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE, I’M KATHELDUNN, I’M A COORDINATOR AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE AND WE’RE HOSTING A WEBINAR TO TALK TO BUT THE ASSOCIATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. IN THIS WEBINAR YOU WILL HEAR FROM MYSELF, KATHELDUNN, AND CURRENT AND RECENT AH LUMNIFELLOWS WILL TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAM, APPLICATIONS MRIICATION PROCESS AND WHY YOU MIGHT WANT TO APPLY AND PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. ALSO A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM, MEGAN KELNERON THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND INTERVIEWS, TYLER ABOUT CURRICULUM, THE CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE, KENDRA AND ERIN ON PROG ELECTRIC LIGHTINGS, AND KANSAS NORTON WILL TALK ABOUT MENTORING. THIS SESSION IS BEING RECORDED FOR LATER USE ON THE NLM MAIN WEB SITE. SO THE NLM OFFERS COURSES FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN LIBRARIANSHIP. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE FOR 50 YEARS AND ACCEPTS A COHORT OF 4-6 ASSOCIATE FELLOWS EACH YEAR. THE PROGRAM IS KNOWN FOR ITS SPLIT YEAR, APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD OF THE YEAR, BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER, FOLLOWS THE CURRICULUM, OR THE ASSOCIATE FELLOWS ARE TAUGHT BY STAFF ABOUT THE WORK THEY DO AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE AND HOW THE WORK PLAYS OUT ON A NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL BASIS. THE NEXT PART OF THE YEAR CONTINUES WITH PROJECT WORK WHERE THE ASSOCIATE FELLOWS WORK ON PROJECTS PROPOSED BY STAFF. THE YEAR IS COMPLEMENTED BY FIELD TRIPS, A WEEK LONG SPRING PRACTICUM, OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE TOURS, ATTEND LOCAL AND NATIONAL CONFERENCES AND MEET WITH SENIOR STAFF. SO A TINY BIT ABOUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS, THEY ARE USUALLY DO AT THE END OF JANUARY, BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY EACH YEAR, THE THIS YEAR THE APPLICATIONS ARE DUE JANUARY27th, 2017. WE WILL INTERVIEW CANDIDATES IN MARCH AND APRIL AND MAKE OFFERS BY EARLY MAY. THE ASSOCIATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM YEAR ALWAYS BEGINS SEPTEMBER1 AND ENDS AUGUST31st. THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS WE RECEIVE EACH YEAR IS 52. YOU’LL HEAR MORE ABOUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS LATER IN THE WEBINAR AND FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SOMEONE WHO’S BEEN THROUGH IT. THE PROGRAM IS EXPERIENTIAL, FROM THE CURRICULUM TO SELECTING AND WORKING ON PROJECTS TO MEETING WITH SENIOR STAFF, TO CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE AND VISITS TO OTHER LIBRARIES. WE HAVE VISITED, THOUGH NOT ALL IN THE SAME YEAR, THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY, THE FDA LIBRARY NPR’S LIBRARY, GOVERNMENT PUBLISHING OFFICE AND NATIONAL ARCHIVE AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION, UNIFORMED UNIVERSITY OFLET HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIBRARY AND WALTER REED NATIONAL CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, HEALTH SCIENCES AND HUMAN SERVICES LIBRARY, MONTGOMERY COLLEGE COMMUNITY LIBRARY AND NOVA FAIRFAX HOSPITAL LIBRARY AND A THOMPKINS McCALL LIBRARY AT VIRGINIA COMMON WEALTH UNIVERSITY. SO NOT ONLY DO YOU GET TO KNOW ABOUT N LM AND WHAT IT DOES BUT YOU GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT AND HEAR ABOUT THE LIBRARY FROM OTHER LIBRARIANS IN THE METROPOLITAN REGION. SO NOW I’M GOING TO TURN THE WEBINAR OVER TO MEGAN KELNERWHO WILL TALK ABOUT APPLICATION PROCESS AND INTERVIEWS.>>OKAY, SO AS KATHELSAID, I WILL TALK ABOUT TIPS I GAINED IN THE INTERVIEW PROCESS. SO BEFORE YOU WORK AND APPLY FOR YOUR APPLICATION, I SUGGEST YOU TAKE TIME TO REFLECT ON WHY YOU’RE APPLY TO THE PROGRAM. SO CONSIDER THINGS LIKE WHAT YOU HOPE TO GAIN THROUGH THE PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WHAT SKILLS YOU OR UNIQUE EXPERIENCES YOU WILL BRING TO NLM, WHY YOU WOULD LIKE A CAREER IN HEALTH LIBRARIANSHIP AND WHAT APPEALS TO YOU ABOUT BECOMING A LEADER IN THE FIELD. SO ONCE YOU CONSIDER THOSE THINGS YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO WORK ON 2 KEY COMPONENTS OF THE APPLICATION AND THOSE ARE THE ASSAYS AND LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION, SO THOSE ARE YOUR PLACE TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT MAKES YOU A UNIQUE CANDIDATE. A SUGGESTION I HAVE IS TO HAVE 2 PEOPLE REVIEW YOUR ASSAYS HAVE 1 LIBRARIAN OR 1 PROCESSOR FROM YOUR SCHOOL AND SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T WORK IN LIBRARIES, IT WILL HELP TO HAVE THE MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES ON WHAT YOU CAN REVISE. AND WHEN WORKING ON GETTING LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION, YOU WILL NEED 3 LETTERS AND 1 HAS TO BE FROM AN INSTRUCTOR. AND I REALLY SUGGEST NOTIFYING THEM OF THIS EARLY. ONE OF MY RECOMMENDERS ASKED TO SEE MY ESSAY RESPONSES BEFORE THEY WROTE THEIR LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION AND THIS REALLY HELPED THEM TO TAYLOR THEIR LETTER AND MAKE IT A MORE–MAKE A MORE COMPELLING RECOMMENDATION FOR ME GOING INTO THE PROGRAM. SO I WOULD REALLY RECOMMEND BUDGETING YOUR TIME AND STARTING THE PREAPPLICATION PROCESS FAIRLY EARLY. SO ONCE YOU’RE READY TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION, KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE USING THOSE INTELLECT WEB SITES AND AS WITH OTHER APPLICATION INTERPHASES, I SUGGEST ALLOW YOURSELF MORE TIME THAN YOU THINK YOU WILL NEED TO DOME PLETE THE APPLICATION. YOU HAVE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT TO ADD THE JOB OPPORTUNITY TO YOUR LIST AND THEN YOU WILL ENTER BASIC PERSONAL INFORMATION INCLUDING YOUR EXPERIENCE, AND TO THE SYSTEM AS WELL AS UPLOAD A COPY OF YOUR RESUME. AND A POINT THAT I WOULD LIKE TO ADD IS THAT YOU WILL SUBMIT YOUR ESSAYS BY COPY BEING AND PASTING THEM INTO VENTILECH, RATHER THAN ATTACHING THEM AS A PDF FILE. SO THEREYA A CHARACTER LIMITOT WORDS FOR YOUR ESSAYS AND I MADE THE FAITHS TAKE OF MAKING THEM ONLY 500 WORDS ONLY TO FIND OUT I HAD EXCEEDED THE CHARACTER LIMIT. SO SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME AND FRUSTRATION BY CHECKING THE CHARACTER LIMIT BEFORE WRITING YOUR ESSAYS AND IT SHOULD GO SMOOTHLY. SO WHEN YOU ARE INVITED TO INTERVIEW ON CAMPUS, THERE’S A LOT OF ANXIETY AND STRESS THAT MAY HAPPEN ABOUT THE INTERVIEW PROCESS IN GENERAL, BUT MY BIGGEST RECOMMENDATION IS JUST TO KNOW YOURSELF SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO INSURE THAT THE INTERVIEW DAY WILL GO AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE FOR YOU? SO FOR ME, IT WAS REACHING OUT TO CURRENT NLM ALUMNI ASSOCIATES. I ASKED THEM QUESTIONS LIKE WHAT WAS THEIR INTERVIEW DAY LIKE? AND HOW DID THEY PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW. THAT REALLY PROVIDED SOME INSIGHT INTO WHAT I COULD EXPECT IS THE KIND OF FEEL I WOULD GET ON THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW. I ALSO RECOMMEND DOING YOUR RESEARCH ON NLM. SO I FOUND IT HELPFUL TO VIEW THE ORGANIZATION CHARTS AND TO UNDERSTAND NLM AS A WHOLE AND TO APPRECIATE THE VARIETY OF WORK THAT THE STAFF DOES, AND JUST KNOW THAT YOU AREN’T EXPECTED TO BE AN EXPERT ON NLM, YOU WILL SPEND MONTHS DOING CURRICULUM LEARNING ABOUT NLM STRUCTURE AND ROLLS. AND ALSO TO PREPARE FOR THE INTERVIEW DAY, KNOWING MYSELF, I TYPED UP A LIST OF QUESTIONS THAT I DID NOT WANT TO FORGET TO ASK STAFF AND BROUGHT THEM WITH ME AND JUST KNOWING THAT I HAD THEM THERE AS BACK UP REALLY HELPED BOOST MY CONFIDENCE, SO THAT MIGHT NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE BUT THAT WAS REALLY A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER FOR ME. I ALSO RECOMMEND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PRACTICE YOUR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS, PRACTICE THEM VERBALLY, DO A PRACTICE INTERVIEW WITH A CO-WORKER, SUPERVISOR OR PEER AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN CONFIDENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY CONVEY YOUR ANSWERS. AND WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO NLM FOR YOUR INTERVIEW DAY, YOU WILL HAVE 1 OF THE CURRENT ASSOCIATES AS YOUR HOST FOR THE DAY AND THEY’LL MEET YOU IN THE LOBBY OF NLM RIGHT BEHIND THESE DOORS AND ESCORD YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR INTERVIEW DAY. SO THE INTERVIEW IS SIMILAR IN FORMAT TO AN ACADEMIC LIBRARY INTERVIEW AND THAT IT CONTAINS BOTH INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP INTERVIEWS. AND JUST KNOW THAT IT IS A LONG DAY AND IF YOU’RE LIKE ME, YOU’RE PROBABLY GOING TO FEEL EXHAUSTED AFTER, BUT IT IS DEFINITELY AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE. THE INTERVIEW CONSISTS OF THE GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEWS, A TOUR OF NLM AS WELL AS LUNCH AND AN OVERVIEW OF BENEFITS AND STIPEND AND THINGS LIKE THAT. SO YOU MIGHT HEAR THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES THAT CAN YOU WALK IN AND THIS IS ACTUALLY TRUE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE WALKING AROUND NLM THROUGHOUT THE DAY WHEN YOU ARE TAKING THE TOUR. AND JUST REALLY DRESS IN A WAY THAT MAKES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED BUT PROFESSIONAL. SO LUNCH IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE INTERVIEW DAY AND ALTHOUGH IT ISN’T A FORMAL PART, AS FORMAL AS THE OTHER SECTION, THE INTERVIEW IS STILL PART, SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE REALLY GREAT CONVERSATIONS WITH THE STAFF MEMBERS AND YOUR ASSOCIATE GUIDE. AND IT’S A TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE. AND MY MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THE INTERVIEW DAY IS TO JUST BE YOURSELF AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO LET YOUR PERSONALLYITY SHOW. SO MY MOMENT FOR BEING MYSELF IS WHEN I CAUSED IN THE INTERVIEW PANELS IN THE INTERVIEW TO LAUGH AND IT PROJECTED MY CONFIDENCE AND THAT I WAS COMFORTABLE AND REALLY HELPED SET THE TONE FOR THE REST OF THE DAY.>>AND NOW WE’RE GOING TO HEAR FROM TYLER MOSES WHO IS A CURRENT ASSOCIATE FELLOW AND SHE WILL TALK ABOUT THE CURRICULUM. IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS, FEEL FREE TO CHAT IN WITH THEM. WE HAVE EVERYBODY ON MUTE SO WE CAN DO THE WEBINAR, BUT WE WILL CERTAINLY TAKE QUESTIONS.>>SO AS KATHELNOTED MY PART OF DISCUSS THE CURRICULUM OF NLM. SO FOR THE FIRST 5 MONTHS FROM SEPTEMBER TO JANUARY, YOU ARE GOING TO BE ENROLLED SO TO SPEAK IN THE CURRICULUM AND WITH THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL LEARN OF THE NLMs DIVERSE ROLES AND SERVICES THAT THEY PROVIDE TO FIELDS FOR BIOMEDICINE AND INFORMATTICS AS WELL AS INFORMATION POLICY. DURING THE CURRICULUM, THE STAFF FROM THE 6 DEPARTMENTS OF NLM WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TYPES OF SERVICES AND PRODUCTS THEY PRODUCE. SO SOME OF THESE DEPARTMENTS INCLUDE THE LIBRARY OF OPERATIONS, EXTRA MURAL RESEARCH, AS WELL AS SPECIALIZED INFORMATION SERVICES. THE CURRICULUM IS DIVIDED INTO UNITS AND THE FORMAT FOR EACH UNIT VARIES. SO SOME UNITS MAY INCLUDE INTERACTIVE HANDS ON ACTIVITIES WHEREAS OTHERS MAY INCLUDE TOURS OF THEIR FACILITIES. AT THE END OF EACH INDIVIDUAL UNIT, YOU WILL WRITE UP A CURRICULUM DEBRIEF WHERE YOU PROVIDE FEEDBACK TO THE STAFF MEMBERS WHO PRESENTED LIKE WHAT YOU LEARNED ABOUT THEIR UNIT AS WELL AS WHAT YOU THINK COULD BE IMPROVED ABOUT THE PARTICULAR UNIT.>>SO WHILE THIS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE, THIS IS TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT INFORMATION MAY BE COVERED IN THE UNIT, SO YOU WILL GET AN EXPENSIVE LOOK AT PUB MED AS WELL AS ANOTHER SERVICE PROVIDED BY NLM WHICH IS BOOK SHELF AS WELL AS A DIGITAL COLLECTION HERE, ALSO AS THE BIOMEDICAL COMMUNICATIONS ISSUE IN THE OFFICE WITHIN THE LISTER HILL. SO HERE’S SOME THINGS YOU WOULD NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CURRICULUM. IT’S VERY MUCH LIKE THE STRUCTURE YOU WOULD HAVE IN A COLLEGE COURSE WHERE YOU WOULD SIT IN THE ROOM AND YOU WOULD HAVE YOUR STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT, LIKE YOU WERE THERE PROFESSORS AND YOU WOULD TAKE NOTES ON THE INFORMATION THAT THEY’RE PRESENTED. IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO TAKE NOTES BECAUSE WHILE THEY DO GIVE YOU COPIES OF THE PRESENTATIONS THAT THEY PRESENT ON, THEY MAY BE–THEY MAY DISCUSS SOMETHING THAT YOU MAY FIND INTERESTING AND MAY NOT BE ON THE PRESENTATION SO IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO WRITE IT DOWN. AND TAKING NOTES HELPS WHEN WRITING THE CURRICULUM DEBRIEF BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT’S DIFFICULT TO REMEMBER ALL THE INFORMATION THAT’S PRESENTED AM ALSO IT’S REALLY BENEFICIAL TO ASK QUESTIONS DURING THE CURRICULUM, THIS IS ALSO YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A MORE INDEPTH LOOK AT WHAT NLM DOES, AND ALSO THIS REALLY CAN HELP YOU, WITH SOMETHING TO ALWAYS HAVE QUESTIONS ON ESPECIALLY FOR–USE MAYBE SOME OF THE SERVICES EXTENSIVELY THROUGH OUR GRADUATE STUDIES. THE CURRICULUM IS REALLY YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS WITH STAFF ACROSS VARIOUS DEMENTS AND YOU GET TO MEET PEOPLE AND LEARN ABOUT THINGS YOU MADE AND NOT BE AWARE OF THAT GOES ON WITHIN THE LIBRARY OF SCIENCE FIELD, AND ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE MAYBE NOT QUITE SURE IN THE LAB OR SCIENCE FIELD, THIS IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO FIND YOUR NICHE. AS I SAID, HAVE YOU INDIVIDUALS PRESENTING FROM 6 DEPARTMENTS AND YOU GET TO LEARN ABOUT THE VARIOUS AREAS IN WHICH YOU CAN–YOU WOULD WORK IN LIBRARY SCIENCE AND THIS COULD BE YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO FIND SOMETHING YOU’RE INTERESTED IN AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT IT. AND I FOUND THIS IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE THEN YOU CAN ALWAYS CONTACT THE PRESENTERS AT A LATER TIME AND ASK THEM ON A MORE–MAYBE 101 BASIS ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND YOU CAN HELP REALLY KIND OF DEVELOP YOUR PROFESSIONAL INTEREST. ALSO THE CURRICULUM IS REALLY YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH POTENTIAL PROJECT COORDINATORS, DURING THE FALL AND SPRING PROJECTS, YOU–MOST OF THESE PROJECTS WILL BE PRESENTED FROM INDIVIDUALS WITHIN THE–ACROSS THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS OF NLM, SO THIS IS REALLY YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO KIND OF SEE AGAIN WHAT KIND OF THINGS EACH DEPARTMENT DOES AND ALSO TO REALLY GET A SENSE OF MAYBE POTENTIAL PROJECTS OR AREAS YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN WORKING IN.>>AND NOW WE WILL HEAR FROM LOANNGUYEN, SHE’S SPENDING HER SECOND YEAR AT THE NIH LIBRARY AND SHE WILL TALK ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE.>>THANKS. I FEEL LIKE I GET TO TALK ABOUT THE FUN PART OF THE PROGRAM. SO WE WERE FORTUNATE TO–I HAVE A VARIETY OF CONFERENCES OPEN TO US AND OUR FIRST CONFERENCE WAS MAC WHICH IS THE MIDATLANTIC CHAPTER OF THE MEDICAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AND IT WAS HELD IN BEAUTIFUL NORTH CAROLINA LAST YEAR AND AT THE CONFERENCE WE HEARD FROM GREAT SPEAKERS INCLUDING A FUNNY TALK FROM AN AUTHOR OF THE BOOK SNOOP, WHAT YOUR STUFF SAYS ABOUT YOU AND LEARNED A LOT ABOUT OURSELVES. AND TECH TALK FROM A–TED TALK WHO FOUNDED iMEDICAL ADS.COMMAND 1 OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE CONFERENCE FOR ME WAS RE CONNECTING WITH COLLEAGUES I WORKED WITH A COUPLE YEARS BEFORE. AND I ALSO HAD THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN AT TUPELOFRIED CHICKEN IN DOWN TOWN ASHEVILLE, SO IN NOVEMBER WE WENT TO THE ANNUAL MEETING, THE ASSOCIATION OF ACADEMIC HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIES. IT’S ANANNUAL MEETING AND OFFERS US A CHANCE TO MEET THE CURRENT LEADERS IN THE FIELD. AND WE SAT AT A TABLE WITH TERESA KNOT, CURRENT PRESIDENT OF MLA AS WELL AS DIRECTORS OF HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIES FROM D. C. AT GOARNLG WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII. AND AAHSL’S ANNUAL MEETING IS USUALLY HELD IN CONYONKS REQUEST THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL COLLEGES WHICH WE ALSO GOT TO ATTEND RIGHT AFTER AAHSL. SO THE AAMC ANNUAL MEETING OF LEARN, SERVE, LEAD, BRINGS TOGETHER TO THE ACADEMIC MEDICAL COMMUNITY AND WE HEARD FROM RESIDENTS AND STUDENTS, EDUCATORS AND FACULTIES AS WELL AS MEDICAL SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHING HOSPITALS, CEOs ON ISSUES TO TRANSFORM HEALTHCARE. WE EVEN HEARD FROM A PULITZER PRIZE WINNING JOURNALIST EUGENE ROBINSON CHOUGH SPOKE ABOUTLET MEDICAL CENTERS TAKING ON RESPONSIBILITIES TO RAISE THEIR VOICES AND WORK FOR LOWER FORMS TO DECREASE HEALTHCARE COST AND ACHIEVE HEALTHCARE EQUITY. THIS PAST SPRING THE HELL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING WAS A COMBINED MEETING WITH THE CANADIAN HEALTH LIBRARY’S ASSOCIATION. THEY DID THIS IN CANADA AND THE INTERNATIONAL CLINICAL LIBRARIANS CONFERENCE AND HELP IN TORONTO. SO WE ALL HAD OUR PASS PORTS STAMPED FOR INTERNATIONAL CHAFFLE. FOR ME, NOT ONLY WAS THIS MEETING AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE, BUT IT ALSO GAVE ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN LIBRARIES WHERE I WAS INTEREST INTERESTED IN DOING MY SECOND YEAR OF THE FELLOWSHIP. AND FEIGNALLY, THESE WERE SOME OF THE SMALLER LOCAL OR 1 DAY EVENTS THAT WE WERE ABLE TO ATTEND, DURING OUR FIRST YEAR. AND I REALLY ENJOYED A LOT OF THEM.>>THANKS LOAN AND NOW WE WILL LEARN ABOUT THE PROJECTS THAT YOU GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO DURING THE PROGRAM. AND FIRST UP IS KENDRA GODWIN WHO IS A ASSOCIATE FELLOW HERE AT NLM. THANK YOU KAHHEL. –KATHEL. STHRKS WE HAD THE SLIDES A BIT OUT OF ORDER SO I WILL FORWARD TO MINE. WE WILL GO BACK TO THOSE. SO FOR MY SECTION NOW WITH 3 FULL MONTHS IN THE FELLOWSHIP, I WILL FOCUS ON DESCRIBING MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE FALL PROJECT. THE FALL PROJECT IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH NLM STAFF ON A PRODUCT PROGRAM OR IDEA THAT ENGAGES YOUR INTEREST AND GIVES YOU FURTHER AND RARE INSIGHT INTO WHERE YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR TIME AT NLM AND IN YOUR CAREER. TO GIVE YOU A SENSE OF WHAT CHOICES ARE OUT THERE, I WANT TO SHARE WITH THE 4 OF US FIRST YEAR ASSOCIATE FELLOWS SELECTED AND ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON. THE IMAGE I INCLUDED HERE ON MY SLIDE IS FROM THIS PROJECT, IT’S A PROJECT WHERE I’M DEVELOPING EXAMPLE PROGRAMMING WITH NLM RESOURCES FOR INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE HOSTING THE TRAVELING EXHIBIT CONFRONTING VIOLENCE. THIS PROJECT WAS PROPOSED AND IS SUPPORTED BY THE EXHIBITION PROGRAM OF THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE DIVISION. MEGAN IS WORKING ON DOCUMENTING RESOURCES FOR NURSING TERMINOLOGIES AND SNOMED CT SINON ME, HER PROJECT SPONSOR IS IN THE MEDLARSDIVISION OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHIC VISION, TYLER SELECTED 2 PROG ELECTEDS FOR THE FALL WITH THE LISTER HILL CENTER FOR NATIONAL BIOMEDICAL ANNOTATION, SHE’S IS WORKING ON TESTING AND AIDING MALARIA SCREENING SYSTEM SYSTEM. OR SECOND PROJECT IS WITH THE OFFICE OF PUB LIAISON COMMUNICATION AND LIAISON WHERE SHE’S INVESTIGATING THE USE OF THICISMULAR SIGNAL PLATFORM TO ANSWER HEALTHCARE QUESTIONS. AND CANDICE PURSUED A METADATA LIBRARIAN WITHIN THE TECHNICAL SERVICES DIVISION WITH HER PROJECT IN MIND. IT INVOLVES HER INVESTIGATING THE FEASIBLE OF ADDING MICRO DATA TO DIGITAL COLLECTIONS MICRO RESOURCE PAGES.>>NEXT WE HAVE THE SELECTION PROCESS. SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND THEY ALWAYS REMIND MYSELF OF HERE WHEN YOU’RE APPLYING AND WHEN YOU’RE HERE AT NLM, PEOPLE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU HERE. IN THE LAST SLIDE, THE 4 OF US SELECTED 5 PROJECTS BUT OVER 20 WERE SUBMITTED BY NLM, NCBI AND LISTER HILL STAFF. THE JOB JAR, LANDING PAGE SEEN HERE ON THIS SLIDE IS THE NLM PROJECT OPPORTUNITY REGISTRY FOR STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THIS IS WHERE PROJECT SPONSORS GO TO SUBMIT IDEAS FOR ASSOCIATE FELLOWS AS WELL AS INTERNS AND STAFF. AND I REALLY ENJOYED SEEING THESE PROJECTS COME IN, AS IT OFFERS INTERESTING BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF WHAT ISSUES AND TRENDS ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO NLM AT THE MOMENT. WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING AN ASSOCIATE FELLOW HERE IS KNOWING THAT WHAT IS BEING WORKED ON HERE IS IMPORTANT ON A NATIONALLY GLOBAL SCALE AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE YOUR FAULT PROJECT MIGHT END UP. THIS SELECTION PROCESS OFFERS AN INTERESTING OPPORTUNITY TO REACH OUT AND SPEAK WITH DIFFERENT PROJECT SPONSORS. AS MENTIONED, I’M WORK WITH THE EXHIBITION PROGRAM BUT SO MANY THESE PROJECTS INTERESTED ME. BEFORE A FINAL SELECTION MANY OF US REACHED OUT TO AND MET MANY INDIVIDUALS TO GET A FEELING FOR STAFF AND THE SCOPE OF THESE PROJECTS. THIS EXPERIENCE AND CONNECTION IS INVALUABLE EVEN IF YOU DON’T END UP WORKING TOGETHER. AND LAST, I WANTED TO TOUCH ON PROJECT MANAGEMENT. THIS FALL PROJECT TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST 5 MONTHS OF THE FELLOWSHIP WHEN WE’RE ALL ALSO ENGAGED IN CURRICULUM AS TYLER DETAILED. THIS PROJECT IS MEANT TO BE 40-60 HOURS AND COMPLEMENT AND ENRICH OUR TIME HERE AND DRAW FROM IDEAS AND STAFF THAT WE’RE EXPOSED TO. A FINAL REPORT IS DUE AT THE END OF THE PROJECT AND SOME REQUIRE PRESENTATIONS TO THE RESPONSE DIVISION AS WELL. ONE THING THAT’S ALWAYS ON MY MIND IS TIME MANAGEMENT. AS YOU CAN SEE HERE I INCLUDED A SCREEN SHOT FROM MY PERSONAL CALENDAR BACK IN THE LAST WEEK OF OCTOBER. THIS IS JUST SHOW YOU WHAT A TYPICAL WEEK CAN LOOK LIKE WITH A CURRICULUM UNIT AND PROJECT DELIVERABLE SCHEDULED. BUT MEETINGS EVENTS OR CONFERENCES AND DIFFERENT CITIES IN THE MIX AS WELL. A GOOD PROJECT SPONSOR IS AWARE OF THESE CHALLENGES AND CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE. THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT I FIBBED THAT INTERACTION AND COMMUNICATION IS KEY. AND A TAKE AWAY, ULTIMATE GOAL MAYLY, YOU ARE TAKING PART IN A PROJECT THAT INSPIRED BOTH YOU AND AIAN DIVISION TO TAKE ACTION AND THIS EXPERIENCE IN THE FINAL DELIVERY OF THE PRODUCT HAS FUTURE’MLICATIONS FOR AND YOU THE LIBRARY. AND THAT’S A POWERFUL THING. I THINK THIS IS THE PERFECT SPACE TO TAKE RISKS AND LEARN MORE ABOUT YOURSELF. AND NOW, I’M GOING TO GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF AARON FOSTER’S SLIDES.>>YES, SO GIVE EVERYONE A CHANCE TO PRACTICE THEIR WEBINAR SKILLS, PARTICULARLY ME. ERIN FOSTER WILL SPEAK NOW. SHE IS AS OF THE END OF AUGUST AN ALUMNI ASSOCIATE FELLOW AND SHE IS CURRENTLY AT THE INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND WILL TELL YOU A BIT MORE ABOUT HERSELF AND ALSO ABOUT THE PROJECTS THAT SHE WAS INVOLVED WITH HERE AT NLM.>>ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU FOR THAT. I WILL REITERATE ABIT AROUND WHAT KENDRA JUST DISCUSSED AND EXPAND MORE ABOUT THE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY DURING THE FELLOWSHIP THAT ALLOWS FELLOWS TO DIVE DEEPER AND PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITIES AND RESEARCH BEING DONE AT NLM. SO THESE PROJECTS THAT FELLOWS PARTICIPATE IN DURING THE COURSE OF NLM, COME IN 2 FORMS AND AS KENDRA MENTIONED AND 1 STAFF PROPOSED PROGEBS BOTH THE FALL AND THE SPRING DURING FALL CURRICULUM FELLOWS CAN GENERALLY WORK ON 1 POTENTIALLY 1, AND WORK ON 2 PROJECTS FOR ABOUT 1-2 MONTHS BUT THE PRIMARY PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES COME IN THE SPRING TIME AND THESE ARE LARGER SCALE AND FELLOWS WORK ON 2 PROG ELECTRIC LIGHTINGS THAT END UP TAKING ABOUT 3-5 MONTHS TO COMPLETE DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF PROJECT AND THE PROJECT AREA CHOSEN. SO ESSENTIALLY AS KATHELMENTIONED, THESE COMPRISE THE MAJORITY OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR FOR FELLOWS. AND AT THE END OF THE YEAR THEY CHOOSE 1 TO PRESENT TO NLM STAFF AND IT’S A CULMINATING OF THE EXPERIENCE THAT ALLOW FELLOWS TO SHOWCASE THE WORK THEMSELVES AS WELL AS COLLEAGUES. SO I WANT TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME HIGHLIGHTING SOME OF THE BENEFITS AS I SEE THEM OF PROJECTS AND GIVE 2 EXAMPLES OF THESE LARGER SCALE PROJECTINGS I’VE COMPLETED RECENTLY. SO PRIMARY FEATURE OF PROJECT WORK IS TO THE ABILITY TO COLLAB 8 WITH NLM STAFF. SO FOR ME IT WAS A HIGHLIGHT. AS TYLER MENTIONED HAVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH PROJECT SPONSORS DURING THE FALL CURRICULUM SESSIONS AND AS YOU LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT AREAS OF NLM AND YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH ON TENTIAL PROJECT SPONSOR WHEN IS YOU WORK ON FALL PROG ELECTRIC LIGHTINGS. SO THIS HELPS YOU GET A GOOD SENSE OF WHO YOU MIGHT WORK WELL WITH AND WHAT AREAS OF NLM ACTIVITY AND RESEARCH THAT MIGHT BE MORE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING FURTHER AND DIVING DEEPER INTO. ADDITIONALLY THESE PROG ELECTRIC LIGHTINGS ARE VERY PRACTICAL AND DEVELOPING SKILLS AND WORK EXPERIENCE THAT CAN YOU LEVERAGE IN FUTURE EMPLOYMENTOT FELLOWSHIP. BUT THE FINAL PIECE THAT I LISTED ON THE SLIDE IS WHAT I FOUND INCREDIBLY REWARDING ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY WHICH IS THE CHANCE TO REALLY EXPLORE AREAS OF INTEREST AND GET A SENSE OF WHAT I WANTED TO DO AS A HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIAN MOVING FORWARD. SO I FOUNDLET EXPERIENCE OF SELECTING AND WORKING ON PROJECTS REALLY BROADENED MY VIEW OF HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIANSHIP AND THE TYPES OF ACTIVITIES AND RESEARCH AREA I COULD BE INVOLVED WITH IN MY CAREER AND THESE 3 ASPECTS, BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND THE DEVELOPING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE AND OBESE CHILDREN MORING AREAS OF INTEREST MADE PROJECT WORK A VERY REWARDING PIECE OF THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. AND THE WORK THAT YOU DO AS THEY MENTIONED ON THESE PROJECTS CAN HAVE REAL IRMPACT AND VISIBILITY AND I’VE INCLUDED 2 EXAMPLES OF WORK THAT SHOW HOW PROJECTS CAN RESULT IN RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY OUTPUT, BUT ALSO ALLOW FELLOWS TO ENGAGE WITH NOT ONLY THE NLM COMMUNITY BUT THE NIH COMMUNITY MORE BROADLY AS WELL AS EXTERNAL GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS. SO IF I CAN GET THE NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE? RIGHT, THANKS SO THE FIRST PROJECT WAS COMPLETED BY R. L. DIERDORFIN THE SAME COHORT HAS ME, AND SHE FOCUSED ON NLM’S INFORMATIONIST AWARDS PROGRAM. SO SHE PARTNERED WITH THE EXTRA MURAL PROGRAMS TO EVALUATE GRANT SUPPLEMENTS THAT PROMOTE THE INCLUSION OF INFORMATION SPECIALIST OR INFORMATIONIST AS PART OF A RESEARCH TEAM. SO AS PART OF THIS PROJECT WORKS, SHE SURVEYED THE PRINCIPLE INVESTIGATORS WHOY RECEIVED THE ROUND OF SUPPLEMENTS TO INCLUDE INFORMATIONIST IN THEIR RESEARCH TEAMS AND SHE ALSO CONDUCTED A FOCUS GROUPOT INFORMATIONIST AND LIBRARIANS WHO WERE ENCLUEDED AS PART OF THIS RESEARCH TEAM AT THE ANNUAL MEDICAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION MEETING IN 2015. SO CAN YOU READ ABOUT THE RESULTS OF THAT ASSESSMENT AND THIS ARTICLE THAT I’VE INCLUDED A SCREEN SHOT OF AND IT WAS RADIO RECENTLY PUBLISHED IN THE ESCIENCE LIBRARIANSHIP IF YOU WERE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE AND THAT ARTICLE IS A GREAT DEMONSTRATION OF THE POTENTIAL KIND OF SCHOLARLY OUTPUT THESE CAN HAVE. WHAT WAS GREAT THOUGH ABOUT ARE–ADMINISTRATIVEIEL’S PROJECT IN THIS INSTANCE WAS NOT ONLY CONTRIBUTION TO FURTHERING AND DEVELOPING AND DEVELOPING OF AN NLM PROGRAM BUT HOW IT ENGAGE WIDE THE MEDICAL LIBRARY COMMUNITY BEYOND NLM AND SOUGHT OUT THEIR OPINIONS AND FEEDBACKOT PROGRAMS AS WELL AS GENERAL EXPERIENCES PARTICIPATE NOTHING A LARGER RESEARCH TEAM. AND THIS ASSESSMENT ALSO FOCUSED ON ACTIVITIES, INVOLVEMENT OF THESE INFORMATIONIST RELATED TO DATA MANAGEMENT AND MORE BROADLY, DID THE SCIENCE ACTIVITY AS PARLIAMENT OF THE RESEARCH TEAM SO IN HER CURRENT POSITION AT UKREBS CYCLE, SF MEDICAL LIBRARY, SHE DEALS WITH ISSUES RELATED TO DATA SCIENCE, MANAGEMENT AND ASSESSMENT SO THIS PROJECT WORK ENDED UP BEING RELEVANT AND TO A DEGREE I’M SURE INFORMED SOME OF HER CURRENT PROFESSIONAL WORK. SO IF I CAN GET THE NEXT SLIDE. SO THE SECOND PROJECT IS 1 THAT I WORKED ON AND I PRESENTED ABOUT AT THE END OF MY FIRST YEAR AS A FELLOW. SO QUICKLY AS PART OF THIS PROJECT, I LOOK INTO THE USE OF COMMON NIH ELEMENTS AND RESEARCH, THROUGH A VERMEN INFECTED VIEW OF LITERATURE AND FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT WERE RELEASED BY NIH. SO COMMON DATA ELEMENTS JUST BRIEFLY. DATA ELEMENT THAT IS ALLOW FOR STANDARDIZE DATA COLLECTION ACROSS DIFFERENT STUDIES SO SEVERAL NIH INSTITUTE VS DEVELOPED AND SPECIFIED ELEMENTS FOR USE IN CONDUCTING STUDIES FOR THEIR PARTICULAR DISCIPLINE OR AREA OF RESEARCH AND TRANSNIH WORKING GROUPS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE USE OF COMMON DATA ELEMENTS IN THE DATA RESEARCH THAT’S SPONSORED BY NIH AND IN WORKING ON THIS PROJECT, I WAS EXPOSED TO THE TRANSNIH GROUPS BUT ALMS THE LARGER GOALS OF NIH TO PROMOTE DATA SHARING AND OPERATING GLOBALLY RANT AND THE ABSTRACT I INCLUDED ON THE SLIDE IS FROM A PAPER THAT HIGHLIGHTS AND DISCUSSES THOSE EFFORTS SO COMMON DATA ELEMENTS IN PARTICULAR ARE NOT A PRIME AREY FOCUS IN MY ROLE, THE IMPORTANCE OF INTEROPERABILITY AND THE ROLE OF DATA STANDARDIZATION IN ENABLINGLY DATA SHARING ARE ISSUES THAT I CONTINUE TO ENGAGE WITH AND BE INVESTED IN AS A PROFESSIONAL. SO THE PROG ELECTRIC LIGHTING WORK ALSO GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OTHER NIH INSTITUTES AND SOME SPECIFIC DATA CHALLENGES FOR SHARING AND ALSO POTENTIAL PARTNERSHIPS TO ADDRESS AND ENGAGE THESE ISSUES. SOCIETY THE EXPOSURE TO THE CHALLENGES AND THE EFFORTS AROUND THAT WAS INCREDIBLY INFORMATIVE TO ME THEN AND CONTINUES TO INFORM THE WAY IN WHICH I INTERACT WITH THE RESEARCH COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE HEALTH SCIENCES NOW. SO IN SHORT THESE 2 PROJECTS ARE EXAMPLES OF THE POTENTIAL SCOPE OF PROJECT WORK THAT FELLOWS CAN BE INVOLVED WITH AND I HOPE SORT OF HIGHLIGHT HOW THIS EXPERIENCE CAN INFORM CAREER PATHS MOVING BEYOND THE FELLOWSHIP. OF COURSE PROJECT WORK ALONE DOES NOT DETERMINE THE CAREER PATH OF FELLOWS BUT I PERSONALLY FOUND THAT ALL MY PROJECT EXPERIENCES WERE REALLY VALUABLE IN CHALLENGING ME AND GIVING ME STRONG INSIGHT INTO THE TYPE OF WORK THAT I WANTED TO PERFORM AS A PROFESSIONAL. AND I ALSO–ALSO THROUGH MY PROJECT WORK, I THINK I CAN SPEAK ALSO FOR MY COHORT AS WELL AS MY OTHER FELLOWS, I’M SURE, REALLY DEVELOP STRONG CONTACTS IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT I WORKED WITH AND DISCOVERED WHAT I HOPE TO BE SEVERAL LIFE LONG MENTORS AMONG THE STAFF MEMBERS I WORKED WITH DURING THE COURSE OF MY TIME AS A FELLOW AND WITH THAT I THINK CANDAS WILL FINISH THIS UP BY DISCUSSING MENTORSHIP.>>THANK ERIN AND THANK YOU ABOUT THE SLIDE MISPLACEMENT. CANDAS IS THE FORTH OF THE FELLOWS AND SHE WILL TALK ABOUT MENTORING AND NETWORKING.>>AWESOME. THANK YOU KATHEL, AND THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT LEAD-IN ERIN. SO MENTORING COMES IN MANY SHAPES AND STYLES FROM FORMAL TO INFORMAL. ONE OF THE BENEFIT SYSTEM AN EMBEDDED MENTOR EXPERIENCE, THIS IS A CHANCE TO DEVELOP A MENTOR RELATIONSHIP WITH A STAFF NUMBER OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR YEAR AT NLM. THIS CONNECTION IS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE INSIDE SCOOP ON LIFE AT NLM. IT CAN HELP YOU ADJUST MORE QUICKLY TO THIS PARTICULAR ENVIRONMENT. WHEN YOU’RE ONLY HERE FOR A SINGLE YORE, YOU NEED TO DIVE IN QUICKLY, GET YOUR BEARINGS AND BE OPEN TO THE EXPERIENCES IN THE PROJECT. THE PARTICIPATING STAFF MEMBERS HAVE CHOSEN TO BE PART OF THE FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE WITH YOU. SO MAKE SURE TO ASK THEM THE SERIOUS QUESTIONINGS, LIKE, SPEAKING CAREER ADVICE AND BOUNCING PROJECT IDEAS AROUND BUT ALSO ASK THEM SOME OF THE SILLIER QUESTIONS LIKE WHERE ARE THE BEST LUNCH AND COFFEE SPOTS? THOSE SORTS OF MORE CASUAL CONVERSATIONS TOO ARE A GREAT WAY TO STAY GROUNDED THROUGHOUT YOUR PART OF THE YEAR. AS MEGAN INTRODUCED US TO THE HECTIC PACE OF THE INTERVIEW PROCESS, AND TYLER WITH CURRICULUM AND ERIN AND KENDRA WITH THE PROJECTS, THE ENTIRE PROGRAM YEAR IS SO VAST PACED HAVING THE NEW CONSISTENT MEETINGS AND CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR MENTOR ARE A GREAT WAY TO STAY GROUNDED. ADDITIONALLY INFORMAL MENTORING IS A LARGE PART OF FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE, WHETHER IT IS THROUGH STRIKING IT AT CONFERENCES OR CONNECTING WITH OTHER NLM STAFF THROUGH PROJECT WORK. THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TALK WITH YOU AND SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES, BE READY TO ENGAGE WITH THEM, PEER MENTORING, IS 1 OF THE UNEXPECTED DELIGHTS OF THE COHORT EXPERIENCE. EVERYONE WHO WAS SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM HAS A DIFFERENT BACKGROUND AND SKILL SET AND YOU CAN LEARN SO MUCH FROM EACH OTHER IT CAN BE LESS INTIMIDATING TO ASK QUESTIONS AND THEN HAVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TOGETHER. THE COO HOTTER EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN A GAME CHANGER FOR ME. LEARNING QUITE A BIT ABOUT MYSELF AND HOW I WORK IN THIS SORT OF GROUP ENVIRONMENT BUT ALSO ACCEPTING THE SUPPORT OF OTHER SKILLED AND ACCOMPLISHED PEERS. GOING THROUGH THIS INTENSE PROGRAM ALONGSIDE ME, AS 1 PAST ASSOCIATE SHARED WITH US EARLIER THIS YEAR, WHO ELSE KNOWS THE EXACT CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES OF THIS PROGRAM BUT YOUR COHORTS? THIS IS–THIS GROUP IS A KEY PIECE OF YOUR FUTURE PROFESSIONAL NETWORK. AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT’S THROUGHOUT CURRICULUM, AT CONFERENCES, THROUGH PROJECT WORK, YOU ARE ALWAYS ENGAGING WITH OTHER PEOPLE. PUT THOSE HARD EARN REFERENCE INTERVIEWING SKILLS TO USE BY HAVING INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS WITH ANYONE THAT CAN YOU GET TO SIT DOWN AND HAVE COFFEE OR LUNCH WITH YOU. I’VE BEEN SO PLEAS ABTLY SURPRISED BY HOW WILLING PEOPLE ARE TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT THEIR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES. THIS PROGRAM JUST PUTS YOU IN SUCH A FANTASTIC POSITION TO MEET WITH AND LEARN FROM OTHER LIBRARIANS DURING SUCH FANNA TAFTIC WORK. REALLY ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK.>>THANKS CANDAS, IF ANYONE HAS QUESTIONS, WE ARE HAPPY TO TAKE THEM IF YOU JUST WANT TO SPEAK OR USE THE CHAT POD AND TALK WITH US. WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. ANYONE MIGHT HAVE? SO 1 QUESTION IS, HAS FOREIGN LANGUAGE KNOWLEDGE HELPED YOU AT ALL? AND UNFORTUNATELY, I ONLY KNOW ENGLISH, SO I DON’T KNOW IF ANYONE WHO KNOWS MORE THAN 1 LANGUAGE WANTS TO WEIGH IN. TYLER CAN? GREAT.>>NOT PER SE IN THE TERMS OF–THAT WAS A KEY THING DURING MY INTERVIEW PROCESS WAS SPEAKING WITH 1 OF THE INDIVIDUALS WHO WHO INTERVIEWED ME, WE KIND OF SPOKE ABOUT HOW I HAD SOME EXPERIENCE SO I DON’T THINK IT’S MUCH OF A–I DON’T THINK IT’S MUCH OF A KEY THING THAT YOU REALLY NEED TO HAVE TO KNOW ONCE YOU’RE IN AN INTERVIEW PROCESS, BUT IT MAY BE–HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE MAY HELP SHAPE THE WAY YOUR KEY INTERESTS IS, AND MAY BE A GUIDING FORCE, ESPECIALLY TALKING WITH SOME PEOPLE WHO MAY HAVE INTEREST. SO LIKE, INDEXERS HERE, THEY HAVE IT, SOME OF THEM HAVE A LOT OF A SENSE OF KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES AND THAT’S SOMETHING YOU MAY WANT TO SPEAK OF IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN THAT AREA.>>THANKS TYLER, THIS IS KATHELDUIN, N, YOU KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE DO WELL IN MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY HAVING TO PICK UP THAT PROFESSIONALLY ANOTHER KIND OF LANGUAGE. I SEE ANOTHER QUESTION, ASKING DOES HAVING A BACK GROUPED IN A FIELD THAT IS NOT HEALTH SCIENCES HINDER ACCEPTANCE INTO THE PROGRAM.>>IT’S A GREAT QUESTION AND NO, IT DOES NOT, ABOUT HALF OF ALL OF THE ASSOCIATE FELLOWS HAVE AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE, AND HAVING A SCIENCE BACKGROUND IS A HELP IN THE PROCESS BUT IT’S THOUGHT A DETERMINANT. DOES ANYONE WANT TO WEIGH IN. HI, THIS IS CANDICE, MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IS IN GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES WHICH IS NOT HEALTH SCIENCES. AND REALLY WHEN YOU ARE WORKING IN HEALTH SCIENCES YOU ARE WORKING IN SUPPORT OF PEOPLE AND WHATEVER EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND YOU ARE BRINGING IN IS IN HOW YOU FRAME IT AND YES OF COURSE IT WILL BE HELPFUL IF YOU HAVE ACTIVITIES OR COURSE WORK OR SOMETHING ELSE TO ROUND IT OUT WHEN YOU COME IN FOR THE APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS AT ITS CORE WHAT YAP DEGREE IN IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN YOU CAN PRESENT.>>ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?>>SO WE HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION, HOW MUCH PRIOR LIBRARY EXPERIENCE IS USUALLY EXPECTED OF FELLOWS.>>WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME OF THE LIBRARY EXPERIENCE, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A LOT. WE RECOGNIZE THEY WERE GOING FOR RECENT GRADUATES FROM LIBRARY SCHOOL. SO YOU MAY HAVE ONLY GRADUATED A COUPLE MONTHS OR NOT YET EVEN GRADUATED WITH US SO WE’RE NOT LOOKING FOR A LOT OF EXPERIENCE, WE KNOW THE GROUP THAT WE WANT TO HAVE. HAVING SAID THAT, THOUGH, IT’S PROBABLY A GOOD IDEA IF PEOPLE HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE THEY’RE LIKE YES, NOT ONLY DO I THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA BUT I TRIED IT OUT A LITTLE BIT. THAT’S PROBABLY A GOOD WAY TO LOOK AT IT.>>WONDERING ABOUT HOW NLM DECIDES WHERE THEY GO FOR THEIR SECOND YEAR. THAT’S THE CHOICE OF THE ASSOCIATES BASED ON THE LETTERS OF INTEREST THAT HAVE COME IN. LAST YEAR, THERE WERE, I THINK ABOUT 6 LETTERS OF INTEREST, AND PEOPLE MAY NOT HAVE HAD THEIR PICK OF EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD THEY WANTED TO GO. THEY HAD A CHOICE. THERE WERE 3 ASSOCIATES LAST YEAR. LOAN I DON’T KNOW IF YOU WANT SAY ABOUT CHOOSING HOW YOU CHOSE?>>WELL, LIKE I MENTIONED BRIEFLY, I HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH SOME OF THE LIBRARIES I WAS INTERESTED IN AT THE MLA CONFERENCE SO IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE PROJECT THEY’RE OFFERING, LOCALITY, AREAS WHERE YOU’RE INTERESTED IN, AND WE ARE LOCATING AND FOR ME, MY FAMILY’S HERE IN THE AREA, SO I WAS LOOKING FOR SOME PLACE AROUND NLM. BAH, I MEAN, THERE ARE–HAD AMAZING PROPOSALS TO CHOOSE FROM AND IT WAS A REALLY HARD DECISION. YEAH, SO, IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AS WELL AS WHAT THE INSTITUTION PROPOSALS ARE.>>I SEE WE HAVE 1 QUESTION ABOUT THE CURRICULUM AND THEN 1 ABOUT WHAT PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR CURRENT ROLE. SO LET ME JUST ADDRESS THE CURRICULUM, DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THAT?>>YES, HELLO, THIS IS TYLER. SO, THERE’S 6 DEPARTMENTS WITHIN NLM AND THAT IPT GREATER CLUEDS THE LIBRARY OPERATIONS, OFFICE OF COMMUNICATION COMPUTER SERVICES, EXTRA MURAL RESEARCH DEPARTMENT, AND THEN THERE’S THE SPECIALIZED INFORMATION SERVICES AND THEN YOU HAVE LISTER HILL, NATIONAL CENTER FOR BIOMEDICAL COMMUNICATION AND THEN THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR BIOTECHNICAL INFORMATION AND THE LAST 1 IS OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR. SO, REALLY DURING THE CURRICULUM UNITS, YOU HAVE THE STAFF NUMBERS FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS COME IN. THEY TALK ABOUT WHAT KIND OF–PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES THAT THEY HAVE, WHAT KIND OF AREAS OF EXPERTISE THEY’RE ON, WHAT KIND OF TRENDS THEY’RE SEEING WITHIN THEIR OWN DEPARTMENT. SO, AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE THAT IN THE EXTRA MURAL RESEARCH, THEY TALKED ABOUT HOW THE GRANT–HOW GRANTS ARE REVIEWED HERE AT THE NIH IN THE PROCESS OF THE GRANTS GOING THROUGH PEER REVIEWED AND HOW PROPOSERS, GO THE PROCESS OF SUBMITTING THEIR GRANTS SO IT KIND’VE VARIES AS TO WHAT’S TYPICALLY COVERED BUT FOR THE MAJORITY IT WOULD BE ABOUT–WHAT THERE’S PARTICULAR PRODUCTS THAT ARE PROPRODUCED BY A DEPARTMENT. THEY WILL SAY WHAT KIND OF PRODUCT THEY WORK ON AND WHAT KIND OF–WHAT KIND OF TYPICAL THINGS ARE DONE BY THE STAFF MEMBERS WITHIN EACH INDIVIDUAL UNIT AND WHAT KIND OF FUTURE TRENDS THEY’RE SEEING IN THEIR UNIT AND WHAT–THEY’LL GIVE YOU LIKE AN ORGANIZATION CHART OF HOW THEY’RE LAID OUT AND ALSO HOW THIS PARTICULAR DIVISION FITS WITHIN NLM AS A WHOLE. I HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION MORE.>>AND THEN THE NEXT 1 WAS WHAT–WHAT MLA COURSE IS BEST PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR CURRENT ROLES?>>YES THIS, IS KENDRA, I’M GOING TO SPEAK TO THIS BRIEFLY. SO I ATTENDED UCLA FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL AND THEY DIDN’T HAVE A FOCUS ON HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIES THERE, SO I FOUND THAT THE MOST HELPFUL THING FOR ME DEFINING MY CAREER TRAJECTORY AND FOR JOINING FELLOWSHIP HERE IS THE INTERNSHIPS THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF AND THEN THE WORK I DID AT UCLA MEDICAL LIBRARY, THOSE WERE INFORMATIVE EXPERIENCES BUT THE 2 COURSES I TOOK PART IN AT UCLA THAT I FOUND HELPFUL, 1 WAS A DATA MANAGEMENT COURSE AND THE OTHER 1 WAS THE MANAGEMENT OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIES, I FOUND THAT HAVING THAT SKILL SET GOING INTO THE VARIOUS CURRICULUM UNIT ASKS HAVING DISCUSSIONS WITH VARIOUS STAFF HERE AT NLM, HAVING THAT AS A FOUNDATION WAS VERY HELPFUL. AND I ASK ADD TO THAT A BIT, THIS IS ERIN FOSTER, I WILL GO WITH WHAT KENDRA SAID AND FOR ME, THERE WERE COURSES I TOOK IN LIBRARY SCHOOL THAT WERE INCREDIBLY HELPFUL BUT THE FACT THAT I HAD WORK IN THE HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY, I WENT TO UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL HILL, THAT WAS A HUGE BENEFIT IN DIRECTING ME CAREER WISE TAR TOWARDS HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIANSHIP. I WOULD SAY THOUGH, FOR LIBIARYERARY SCHOOL COURSES, I REALLY FOUND THE OPPORTUNITY WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL TO EXPLORE SOME OF THE MORE TECHNICAL COURSES. I TOOK A SYSTEMS ANALYSIS COURSE AS PART OF THE LIB LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCHOOL AT CHAPEL HILL AND SOME OF THOSE COURSES THAT I DIDN’T THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST TO ME, I FOUND CONTRIBUTING HEAVILY AGAIN AS A SAID IN MY SLIDE, TOWARDS BROADENING WHAT I COULD DO IN MY HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIANSHIP. SO THAT’S A BIT I HAVE BEEN THINK BEING AND SORT OF INFLUENCING ME.>>AND WE A QUESTION, ARE THERE PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES THAT FOCUS MORE ON THE USER SERVICES AND LESS ON TECHNICAL SIDE OF LIBRARIANSHIP.>>THIS IS KATHEL, I WOULD SAY YES AND NO. THIS LIBRARY IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND WE GENERALLY SERVE EVERYONE BUT WE DON’T GET A LOT OF FOOT TRAFFIC AND SO WE DON’T HAVE ANY EXTENSIVE REFERENCE SERVICE TOO MUCH AND WE DON’T HAVE A POPULATION, LIKE A POPULATION OF STUDENTS. SO THE KINDS OF USER SERVICES THINGS THAT WE MIGHT FOCUS ON IS TESTING TO IMPROVE OUR PRODUCT, WE MIGHT LOOK AT OUTREACH BUT WE WOULD LOOK AT ANALYZING DATA ON VARIOUS OUTREACH PROGRAMS. WE MIGHT LOOK AT THE USERS OF SOME OF OUR PRODUCTS AND LOAN DID AN ANALYSIS THAT WAI AND TALKED TO PEOPLE THAT WAY BUT THERE IS A REFERENCE DESK, PEOPLE IT IS STAFF BUT IT’S NOT–LIKE A LOT OF OTHER LIBRARIES, IT’S NOT A LIST OF HEALTH SCIENCES NOT AS ACTIVE AS IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN YEARS AGO. IT IS A GREAT PLACE TO COME BECAUSE WE MAKE ALL THE TOOLS THAT PEOPLE USE SO IF–IF THAT’S–IT’S TRACTIVE TO YOU, AND YOU’RE LIKE, OKAY, I WOULD LOVE TO GET THAT EXPERIENCE BECAUSE THEN LEAVING HERE AND IF YOU WANT TO BE MORE WITH THE STUDENT POPULATION OR WORK WITH RESEARCHERS, YOU WILL BE AT THE PLACE THAT HAS IT. BUT IF YOU REALLY, REALLY ENJOY THAT AND WANT TO HAVE THAT FROM THE GET-GO, THIS MAY NOT BE A GOOD MATCH FOR YOU.>>YOU ARE VERY WELCOME.>>ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? WELL WE ARE GETTING CLOSE TO THE END OF THE HOUR, SO WE WILL CLOSE THIS OUT. AND WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO POST THIS TO OUR WEB SITE SO YOU’LL SEE THE RECORDED WEBINAR THEN. IVE THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR JOINING US LATE IN THE DAY ON A DECEMBER TUESDAY AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THE PROGRAM.
