The Independent’s latest small business confidence
index returned to positive territory this quarter after a steady decline last year. Continued progress on Brexit talks will be
key to ensuring this upward trend continues in the months ahead. The research shows that half of small exporters
want to see a trade deal struck with the US post-Brexit. One in four are calling for trade agreements
with Canada and China. Granting the UK freedom to enter into new
trade talks was a crucial development. So too was the offer of permanent residency
for EU workers One in five small employers has a member of staff from Europe on their
books. UK-made wine holds its sparkle. A record number of bottles of UK-made wine
reached the market last year, up 64% from 2016, as vineyards released more sparkling
and specialist wines. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA)
said the industry was reaping the benefits from a “huge” investment over the last decade. Camel Valley vineyard in Cornwall is now available
on British Airways First Class cabins. TSB continues to ramp up its challenge against
the big banks by announcing the launch of Business Marketplace – a one-stop-shop which
will give small businesses the means to compare financing options in one place. There are millions of hardworking people employed
by over 5.7 million small businesses right across the UK, together they make up 60 per
cent of the private sector economy.
