Kate Middleton revelation: How Prince William broke tradition when he proposed to Duchess – News 24

William and Kate married in 2011 and, as William is second-in-line to throne, the whole world watched as the future King and Queen consort said their vows to one another  They started dating while they were both students at the University of St Andrew’s in Scotland, soon becoming university sweethearts While they hit a brief rough patch in 2007 and split up for a few months, it wasn’t long until William asked Kate if she would like to get back together Supporters had been speculating for years about whether Kate would be the one William would settle down so their engagement announcement in 2010 was welcomed  In their first ever joint interview, broadcast on Sky News in November 2010, journalist Tom Bradby asked William for the details on how he proposed: “Did you ask Kate’s dad and what did you say and what did your respective parents say when you told them?” The royal replied: “Well I was torn between asking Kate’s dad first and then the realisation that he might actually say no dawned upon me So I thought if I ask Kate first, then he can’t really say no, so I did it that way round  “I managed to speak to Mike sort of soon after it happened really and then it happened from there ” Tradition dictates that the man asks the woman’s father if he would permit them to wed, before asking the woman However, some argue William showed signs of how the monarchy was modernising when he decided to ask Kate first  Mr Bradby then asked: “Kate what did your mother say?” A slightly nervous Kate said: “I think as any mother would be, she’s absolutely over the moon and actually we had quite an awkward situation because I knew, and I knew William had asked my father, but I didn’t know if my mother knew so I came back from Scotland and my mother didn’t make it clear whether she knew or not  “So both of us were there, looking at each other and feeling quite awkward about it! But it was obvious she was very happy for us ” William proposed while the two of them were on holiday in Kenya, with several friends, and were staying at Lea Safari Camp  In the interview, he said: “I was planning it and it just felt really right out in Africa   “I’ve been planning it a while, but as every guy out there will know, it takes a certain amount of motivation to get yourself going I was planning it and it was beautiful at the time. I had done a little bit of planning to obviously show my romantic side ” Mr Bradby said: “Kate you had been on holiday for a while, so did you see this coming, was he getting nervous and jumpy?” Kate replied: “No, not at all, you know we were out there with friends so I really didn’t expect it at all I thought he might have maybe thought about it, but no, it was a total shock. When it came I was very excited!”  The Duke of Cambridge said he had been carrying the ring around with him in his rucksack for about three weeks, and he would “not let it go”  He added: “I was keeping hold of it because I knew if this thing disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble ” The ring he used to propose was actually Princess Diana’s engagement ring, making it that bit more precious  Her tragic death following a car crash in 1997 sent shockwaves all around the world William was only 15 at the time, and his brother Prince Harry was 12. Trending  He explained his choice in the interview: “I though it was quite nice because obviously, [Diana] has not been around to share any of the fun and excitement of it all  “This is my way of keeping her close.” William and Kate now live in Kensington Palace Estate with their three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis
