Intro to the National/International Fellowships & Scholarships (NIFS) Office

a good personal statement always has some kind of theme or story within it it really depends on the scholarship but one of the things that we try to do is help students think about how they might successfully effectively tell their own story you know really do find out what you want to do in the future and what you’re passionate about and if you know that and you still have time you know get relevant experiences in those areas that are related to what you want to do internships research experiences the more the better I think the biggest piece of advice that I would give and that was given to me is to really focus on why you want to go to grad school what what sorts of things you can give to the world as a scholar for a long time I’ve had like all these different ideas and interests but never was really able to put them together into like a paragraph to explain to somebody if somebody asks so we want to do after you graduate so going through the application process really helped with each scholarship has a different process but they do take time and the secret to having a very successful application is to do many many many drafts I heard about the goldwater scholarship through the professor who mentors me in the lab and he told me about the NIFS office and that I should go online and check it out so I did I learned about the NIFS office from my mentor dr. Maisie Robinson she thought that the scholarship would be a good opportunity for me and that I would be a great candidate so I got in touch with the NIFS office and went from there a few of my professors actually sent me a link and said hey you should apply for this I think you’re a really strong candidate one of my students won a Goldwater competition…won of Goldwater scholarship a few years ago Amy Pocadillo she’s now in the ph.d program in environmental engineering at Cornell but it was multiple cycles in helping her frame the work she was doing in my lab in a way that showed its potential societal impact I liked seeing how well my students are doing my students who have won Awards have done great things and they actually create help create a network where I can send current students to talk to past winners or other students who have gone through the process and I think it just shows how great the education is at Michigan State how great the student body is
