Humberto Velazquez – First Generation – Haslam College of Business

I came to the US when I didn’t know a single word of English, so coming to a country that you don’t speak the language, you don’t know the culture… I had to be willing to step out of my comfort zone every single day. The idea of me going to college was not planted in me until junior year of high school when I got inducted into the National Honor Society. My dad’s boss, mister Andy Taylor, he graduated from the University of Tennessee, so he knows his way around UT very well. He saw potential in me and who said you know I’m gonna help you. I applied to the university and I got accepted and here I am graduating from the University of Tennessee. I’m really excited because honestly a lot of my family friends that they have little kids that are like “Mom I want to be like Humberto in the future,” and I’m like I’ll help you get there. That’s one of the things I’m excited for. Always having that support from my mom and dad has really helped me. I believe they are very proud. I know they are. You know they have shaped me and have molded me into who they wanted a son to be. They’re not missing this for anything. They’re not missing this for anything. I feel welcome here at the Haslam College of Business because you really build a good relationship with your professors. The help that I’ve been able to find here at the University of Tennessee has really made me a successful young individual. My academic adviser she really believed in me and made me believe that everything was going to work just through hard work and perseverance and the passion that I had. I realize what is the opportunity that I have in my hands and what will happen if I don’t take advantage of that opportunity. [Music] [Applause] [Music]
