Hong Kong protests complicate US-China trade talks

THEY’RE THAT JOINED AT THE PROVERBIAL HIP, LET’S GO TO THE PUBLISHER, AND UNITED CAPITAL CEO JOE DURAN. JOE I’M LOOKING AT THESE KIND OF DEVELOPMENTS AND THINKING WELL, THE LIKELIHOOD OF SCORING A DEAL QUICKLY NOW IS AT LEAST COMPLICATED. WHAT DO YOU THINK?>> YES, ANYTHING THAT ADDS MORE QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE RESOLVED OBVIOUSLY COMPLICATE THINGS, AND PLAY INTO DONALD TRUMP’S HANDS, INTO OUR PRESIDENT’S HANDS FRANKLY BECAUSE HE CAN THEN SAY LOOK THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T DO A DEAL WITH THEM AND ANYTHING THAT VALIDATES HIS POSITION IS HELPFUL TO HIS CAUSE, AND I DO THINK CLOUDS THE WATER A LITTLE BIT MORE. I THINK MEXICO WAS A DISTRACTION WHICH WAS NOT HELPFUL GETTING THAT OFF THE TABLE ALLOWS THEM TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE RIGID WITH THE CHINESE. I ALSO THINK YOU HAVE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE CURRENCY BECAUSE WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THEIR CURRENCY GOING DOWN, THEY’RE ABLE TO ACTUALLY OFFSET A LOT OF THE TARIFF IMPACTS. NEIL: THAT’S RIGHT.>> THAT SHOULDN’T BE IGNORED. NEIL: IT’S FUNNY TOO RICH ON THAT CURRENCY FRONT THE PRESIDENT IS KIND OF THE SIDE THAT HE DOESN’T HAVE THE SAME FREEDOMS THAT HIS CHINESE COUNTERPART DOES SO ESSENTIALLY CONTROL WHAT WOULD BE THE FEDERAL RESERVE THE WAY HE CAN CONTROL THE CENTRAL BANK OF CHINA, AND RIG THAT CURRENCY TO GET THE DESIRED RESULT. THIS IS ALL THE MORE COMPLICATED NOW, RIGHT?>> IT’S A LOT MORE COMPLICATED. THE U.S. HAS BY FAR THE ECONOMIC LEVERAGE IN THIS RELATIONSHIP, BUT OF COURSE THE DIFFERENTIATOR IS THAT PRESIDENT XI IS THE PRESIDENT FOR LIFE, AND THE MILITARY STANDS BEHIND HIM AND THE MILITARY IS NOT GOING TO BE MOVED, SO THIS IS A TENSE SITUATION. I COULDN’T AGREE MORE WITH JOE. THAT TRUMP REALLY NEEDS TO LET GO OF PICKING TRADE FIGHTS OR SPATS WITH EUROPE OR MEXICO OR ANYBODY ELSE, FROM THIS POINT FORWARD, BECAUSE IF YOU BELIEVE PRESIDENT TRUMP IS THE ONE TO MANAGE THE RELATIONSHIP WITH CHINA, HE FIRST HAS TO GET RE-ELECTED AND RIGHT NOW HE HAS HIGH DISAPPROVAL RATINGS IN STATES HE WON IN 2016 LIKE WISCONSIN AND IOWA BECAUSE OF THE FALLOUT HADS FROM THE TRADE WAR. NEIL: WELL THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER ISSUES THAT MIGHT BE WITH HIS POLL NUMBERS BUT YOU RAISE A GOOD POINT BUT KAITLYN WHAT I’M WONDERING ABOUT IS THE PRESIDENT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WISE TO HOLD OFF ON THESE RENEWING TALKS BECAUSE HE IS VERY PATIENT ABOUT THIS HE MIGHT NOT RENEW IT ANY TIME SOON AND NOW GIVEN WHAT’S HAPPENING IN HONG KONG, HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN PROVEN, HOW IS THIS ALL GOING TO FALL OUT DO YOU THINK?>> I THINK THERE’S TWO COMPETING FACTORS HERE. SO FOR CHINA, PRESIDENT XI DOESN’T WANT TO LOOK LIKE HE’S GIVING INTO TRUMP’S DEMANDS. HE SAID THAT HE WON’T DO THAT, AND SO IT’S KIND OF A POLITICAL FACTOR HERE BUT ON THE OTHER HAND AS WE’RE WATCHING TROUBLE WITH CHINA’S ECONOMY, I MEAN, IF CHINA AND THE U.S. DON’T COME TO SOME KIND OF TRADE AGREEMENT THEN THINGS COULD GET WORSE ECONOMICALLY IN CHINA, SO THOSE ARE KIND OF THE TWO COMPETING FACTORS I THINK THAT ARE GOING TO BE AT PLAY IN THE NEXT WEEKS AND MONTHS. NEIL: YOU KNOW, THERE ARE ALWAYS BLACK SWAN DEVELOPMENTS FOR THE MARKET YOU REMINDED ME THAT OVER THE YEARS THAT AND I’M WONDERING THIS HONG KONG THING COULD BE THAT. ALL OF A SUDDEN OUT OF NOWHERE CHINA HAS THIS NEW EXTRADITION POLICY THAT JUST CAME OUT OF THE BLUE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, THEY THOUGHT THAT HONG KONG RESIDENTS ACCEPT IT AND OBVIOUSLY, IT’S PROVEN BUT THIS COULD EASILY ESCALATE INTO SOMETHING. WHAT DO YOU THINK?>> I THINK IT’S QUITE LIKE, SORRY, ARE YOU TALKING TO ME, NEIL? NEIL: I AM JOE, YES, I APOLOGIZE>> OKAY, GREAT I THINK IT’S UNLIKELY THEY WILL PICK THIS MOMENT TO DO THAT. AGAIN THEY HAVE A CENTRAL- CONTROLLED GOVERNMENT. THEY, LIKE OUR OWN PRESIDENT, KNOWS HOW TO DISTRACT WHERE NECESSARY, IF THEY DON’T LIKE WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE U.S. FRONT, IT’S CREATED A DISTRACTION HERE AND IT’S WORKING, AND I THINK THEY’LL RESOLVE IT AND ACT LIKE THEY’VE DONE WELL, AND THEN THEY’LL CONTINUE BACK. THEY HAVE NO REASON TO MOVE QUICKLY, AND SO THEY WOULD RATHER WAIT UNTIL THE ELECTION PASSES AND SECONDARILY THEY AREN’T DOING ANYTHING EMBARRASSING TO THEIR LEADERSHIP SO YOU’VE GOT TO BE VERY CONSCIENCE OF THE FACT THAT WE’VE GOT TO GIVE THEM A WAY OUT AS WELL BUT I DON’T THINK THEY WILL MOVE VERY QUICKLY AT ALL. THIS IS JUST A DISTRACTION. NEIL: I COULD REMEMBER A LOT OF PEOPLE THINKING BACK IN 1989 RICHARD THAT COOLER HEADS WOULD PREVAIL AND CERTAINLY THE CHINESE AUTHORITIES WOULDN’T ATTACK PEOPLE, AND WE ALL KNOW IN RETROSPECT THAT WAS WRONG AND I’M BEGINNING TO WONDER, WITH LEAVING TRADE OUT OF THE EQUATION OBVIOUSLY EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE A GOOD TRADE DEAL SCORED THERE ARE BIGGER WORRIES NOW.>> WELL THERE ARE BIGGER WORRIES. CHINA’S MADE NO BONES ABOUT THE FACT THAT IT WANTS TO REASSERT ITSELF AS THE WORLD’S LEADING NATION AND THEY’VE GOT THE 2025 PLAN TO DO THAT, TO MAKE TO GET INDEPENDENCE AND ALL OF THE MILITARY TECHNOLOGY, ALL OF THE KEY TECHNOLOGIES GOING FORWARD. THEY ARE AT A VERY CRITICAL JUNCTURE RIGHT NOW. IT’S JUST THAT I DON’T SEE, IS HONG KONG LIKE THE SHIPPING YARD S IN THE LATE 1980S? I DON’T THINK THAT THERE’S A MECHANISM FOR ANY KIND OF A DEMOCRATIC REVOLUTION IN CHINA, SO GIVEN THE MIGHT OF THE MILITARY AND THAT PRESIDENT XI IS PRESIDENT FOR LIFE IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION RIGHT NOW. NEIL: WELL YOU KNOW THE NEXT STAGE I’M WAITING FOR, KAITLYN, IS WHEN THEY ORDER PEOPLE TO STOP ASSEMBLING IN HONG KONG AND THEY REFUSE TO DO SO. THEN, ALL BETS ARE OFF BECAUSE WE KNOW FROM THE PAST THAT CHINA DOESN’T TAKE VERY KINDLY TO DISOBEDIENCE. THEN WHAT WE’RE DISCUSSING, TRADE IS THE LEAST OF OUR WORRIES.>> RIGHT I THINK THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT, NEIL AND YOU KNOW THAT COULD BE A VERY STARK IMPACT, NOT ONLY IN OUR ECONOMY AND CHINA’S ECONOMY BUT THAT COULD REVERBERATE WORLDWIDE SO THERE WOULD BE SOME VERY INTERESTING CONSEQUENCES TO THAT NEIL: TO PUT IT MILDLY GUYS I WANT TO THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE’RE STILL TRYING TO KEEP ON TOP OF THESE DEVELOPMENTS IN HONG KONG, PROTESTS OF WHICH WE’VE NOT SEEN FOR YEARS, REMEMBER HONG KONG ENJOYS THIS SEPARATE BUT EQUAL STATUS AND IT IS A THRIVING CAPITALIST MECCA, THAT ENJOYS EVEN MORE CAPITALIST RIGHTS AND INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS THAN AS CHINA REMEMBER WHEN THE BRITS HANDED THAT OVER TO THE CHINESE BACK IN 1997, WITH THE UNDERSTANDING OF THAT SEPARATE

  1. We gotta get 'em, NOW!! People are worried about the markets taking a dip?? We're beyond that – it's economic war now, or REAL war later… we might have real war, anyway, since we've let them get so far

  2. I feel bad for the Chinese people because president Xi is president for life, you don’t have a choice, it’s communism, so unless he die the people are stuck with him.

  3. The people of China want Liberty, We the people of the United States should support the freedom fighting people of China. Liberty for all. God bless America 🇺🇸

  4. I'm looking forward to 25% tariffs on Mexico. Then America can really get back to companies doing production here and provide some benefits to workers.

  5. Easy. Just freeze up all the Chinese foreign assets holdings in the USA until the matter is resolved. This is more about the protest about the most uncompromising justice in Mainland China (Guilty unless proven innocent , execution first and trial later) than about extradition.

  6. The all powerful, all controlling, all knowing Chinese government is getting it's boat rocked? Well isn't that too bad.

  7. All these talking heads are always wrong about Trump. Tariffs are working and nobody cares about your profits🤨

  8. Internal problems in china is good news for america and trump.

The state department needs to find a way to stir this pot a little(if thats not already going on). When the chinese millitry starts shooting citizens of HK, trump can justifably impose sanctions.

I say lets bring these commies to their knees

  9. Never Trumper Cavuto quick to criticize the president when he hasn't anywhere near Trump's accomplishments.

  10. Just because Hong Kong citizens have the right to protest, that don't make it right. Hong Kong people are protesting the wrong thing. You commit crime in China, you go back to china to face the justice. Absolutely logical. US should get blame at least for supporting a wrong cause.

  11. This has nothing to do with the trade. China can steal whatever and face the consequence but Hong Kong criminals who did their deeds in China should go back to China

  12. Chinese are gamblers, liars, crook, they are making a show, playing smart, guided by Democrats, but they need America, to survive.

  13. 贸易战中国已经没兴趣谈了。还想拿香港做筹码。fox真是凸显特朗普那一帮兄弟的弱智。

  14. It must be almost worse to experience freedom and have that taken away rather than not knowing freedom of speech in the first place… I think that Lam is a pawn and she knows it but she has ultimately sold her soul and is disposable to Beijing.

  15. US govt. direct support the protest, with no hide.
After the people knew that, the people in protest from 190k (Western media call 1million) dropped to 398 person.
And most of the Pro-Democracy organization now blame USA to use people for USA's own interest.

  16. Freedom is good for you and me , but not good for the country! We believe if ur country be strong , u can get a lot form ur country !

  17. The actual number of people at the protests is only 240,000, which is only 3% of Hongkong's population ,. The other 97 % of the population did not protest and hence these 97 % of the people support this extradition policy . This news network also fail to mention that more than 800,000 people , which dwarfed the number of protestors , signed a petition , supporting the extradition policy .

  18. Since Hongkong has an extradition law with the USA, to allow criminals to be exchanged between Hongkong and the Usa, it would be ridiculous and ironic if Hongkong does not go ahead to also create an extradition law between Hongkong and China . I support the creation of an extradition law between Hongkong and China , as there is also an extradition law between Hongkong and the Usa .

  19. Joe is wrong here. Trade talks and politics are different issues. The President has already done too much damage to his credibility at this point.

  20. Too many armchair warriors getting on TV and "think" they're smarter than our POTUS. smh. It's irritating. Just give US the Facts News People. Just the facts please. Our wonderful POTUS is very smart, courageous and Loves America. And he listens to WE the People. We the Voters.

  21. Just send these SoB away to anywhere they want to be, give the real Chinese in Hong Kong a peaceful environment

  22. According to the police in Hong Kong, there were about 240.000 protestors on the streets and Hong Kong has only 7.3 million people. Less 1/9 is hardly the majority.

  23. There is freedom of religion and speech in China as long as you’re not breaking the law.
There are many churches and over 39000 mosques in China.
Islam has been practiced in China for 1,400 years.

Anyone committed crimes in China will be treated exactly the same law with China legal system. It does not matter whether they Chinese or Canadians.
If you have never been to China, I’d encourage you to do so and have look for yourself.

  24. The "Fugitive Offenders Ordinance" was preceded before Hong Kong be returned to China. According to the Ordinance, Hong Kong has signed deal with 20 jurisdictions, that is, an agreement to extradite them. However, it does not include mainland China, Taiwan and Macao. This amendment was initiated by the Hong Kong SAR Government and they want to add the above areas.

The Hong Kong opposition immediately politicized and labelled this amendment, claiming that the Chinese mainland could extradite political prisoners from Hong Kong in accordance with the new "Fugitive Offenders Ordinance" in the future, thereby combating freedom of speech in Hong Kong. However, the SAR Government’s draft amendments clearly stipulate that criminals who apply to the transfer to the Mainland must be guilty of 37 internationally recognized criminals with a term of seven years or more, and must be approved by the SAR courts and special chiefs before they can be implemented. transfer. It also stipulates that "eight kinds does not hand over", clearly indicating that the transferred criminal does not involve behavior related to speech, that is, it does not involve acts of news, media, academics, publications, etc.

Returning to the origin of the amendment, it is completely normal legislative action. The Hong Kong opposition is doing something malicious with the support of the West. As we all know, under the Western-style democratic system, there is often a market for malicious things, and it is a "big thing" for things that are not things.

  25. Hong kong prostestors timed it well..during trade negotiations with US.. China dont have the balls to shoot them…just incase the world starts siding with the US

  26. What is an "extradition bill"? Huh??? Their protesting "extradition" like that??? Mmmmm, I smell a rat.

  27. Some have pointed out that this riot is just another organized by the US – like in Venezuela and others. If true, what would China do?

  28. CIA at work. US did a pretty good job in organizing this one. Extradition law? Does US have extradition law????

  29. The People's Republic Of China is a cancer that needs to be cut. I just hope it has not spread to Hong Kong yet.

  30. CIA really loves this….PS: US is indebted to China to about 1.2 trillion dollars…when one country owes another country so much money……. they become partners.? But obviously it's not Trump's choice…the old man just wants trade war?

  31. HK has no extradition law and is full of murderers. A HKer killed his pregnant girlfriend in Taiwan and can't be extradited. The extradition bill says in it that China can't extradite for political reasons. Professors at HK University approved the bill. Typical lieing Western media fanning the flame.

  32. There's over 1 Billion people in China. Perhaps they'll rise up and get rid of the commies altogether, once and for all. Nothing like a little revolution to shake things up a bit, just ask the commies. That's how they've always gotten into power themselves.

  33. What have HK affairs got to do with US. Just mind your own bloody business and every parties will be happy. Stop your hypocrisy under the pretext of democratic values, human rights, freedom of all the shits blah blah blah.

  34. Its almost as if outsiders are involved…The Globalist Billionaires and their bought and paid for minions (the Dims/RINOs and fat boy) have been telling Xi to wait out Trump, now this…Smells like….Soros….Steyer…

  35. UN should send in peacekeeping forces. If they disallow then the west can impose global sanctions on China. Hurt them economically is the best way especially now that they are hurting from Trump's tarriffs.

  36. why are we talking to Communist Pigs? Just get this done and over with, go to physical war with them and be done with Communism.

  37. No one is coming to help you Honk Kong….you either fight for your freedom or let the CCP run your lives. Protest aren't going to get your rights, remember Tiananmen Square.

  38. Hong Kong ese would rather be British dogs than Chinese humans, sad. They should all swim to queen’s country and be awarded British passports for their loyalty to the crown.

  39. Happy birthday , President Trump! Now the whole world sees the real face of the communist China who seldom
keep her promise (like the autonomy of HK)
From HK, the colony of C. China.

  40. I'm copying this from a video about Thucydides's Trap. Apparently this has been circulating on Chinese social media and got translated by somebody:

  41. The HKNERS though they're still under British rule & they can't accept it was returned to China after 99 years of waiting!!! He he he!

  42. Trade war with USA, Hauwei cell phone bans in 5 eyes countries, Poland and Japan, protestors defiance against Chinese control government in HK. China is shaking

  43. China has to get nuked and there militay has to killed like how they killed inoccent people.

  44. Trump smart in those areas he's not going to run a high sprung rally I probably run it a conversation and explain to them people the times are rough right now but time will be better if you ride with me

  45. China is a disease to humanity, they bring drugs, causes chaos in the sea (south china sea), they manufacture toxic and low standard products, and their mainland people are uneducated (see how they disrespect every country during their travel.. Boycott chinese products everyone!

  46. Why complicated? Hong Kong is not U.S. business, just as U.S. is not Russia's business. Fox news is farce news, creating news.

  47. That man said Trump loses support in Wisconsin and Iowa? What rubbish! Trump’s support at this juncture is at all time high! This section of Fox News is Fake News!

  48. Democrats caused businesses to flee to China, and now China is getting power it doesn't deserve, trying to take over HK, and the people of HK know that if China overtakes them, it'll be an even more bad day.
