Executive Fellows Program: Co-Directors Robin Ryde and Catherine Althaus


I think students should come in
expecting to be stretched and challenged and to have fun that’s a really key part.
They’re also going to be joining a very powerful alumni group of about a
thousand people who have done the Executive Fellows Program before and
that’s a really important and valuable element. ROBIN: We’re now entering the 15th year of EFP. We first ran the program in 2003. For this year we’re going to be going to
three countries, three cities: Wellington Canberra and Singapore. Most people that join the EFP are very experienced public servants and I think what they’re
looking at is a period of time ahead where they can really make a profound
impact and difference in what they’re doing and I think if there’s one
stopping off point that can help them make the best use of that available time,
it’s three weeks on the EFP to soak up so much fantastic experience from
colleagues and also external contributors to return with renewed power and energy. CATHERINE: Diversity and inclusion is an essential part of what the modern leader needs to
tap into to take the best of what’s on offer and you know, really deploy that to
advantage across content issues as well as the style and way that we do things
in the public purpose sector. ROBIN: We have a participant group that is almost exactly
50/50 male and female and for this year we’re also going to represent that
gender split of 50/50 for the contributing academics and practitioners
that we bring onto the program. CATHERINE: I think I’m really excited about the fact that
we’re recognising that leadership is not just a professional activity it’s
something that we need to embody and it’s holistic and we are very committed
to that in this delivery of the program. We’ll be experimenting with some new
cases, we’ll be experimenting with elements of the creative arts industries. We will be
really focusing in not just on the wicked problems that we traditionally
deal with but flipping that on its head and saying how can we think about
success in new ways? And so for me that’s the most exciting aspect.
