Since 2005, AAAS has administered the L’Oréal USA For Women in Science program. Each year, the program awards five postdoctoral, female scientists grants of $60,000 each for their contributions in STEM fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations. AAAS manages the program’s application and peer-review process. First, experienced scientists review applications from candidates in their field, then a jury of multidisciplinary scientists selects the five winners. The fellows are selected both for the potential impact of their research, and their commitment to developing girls and women in STEM through mentoring, community service and other outreach efforts. The 2019 fellows include five scientists and engineers in the fields of developmental neuroscience, biomedical engineering, RNA biology, oceanography and marine science, and materials research. AAAS also administers the Changing the Face of STEM program that is an extension of the L’Oréal USA For Women in Science program. These awards, launched in 2016, directly support alumni fellows in their efforts to mentor and inspire girls and women in STEM. We know that STEM jobs are the jobs of tomorrow, but today… women only make up 24 percent of STEM workers in the United States, only 14 percent of the country’s engineers, and 27 percent of computer science professionals. Without appropriate female representation, the STEM potential innovations of tomorrow will be missing half of the talent in our world. To this end, the L’Oréal USA For Women in Science program seeks to retain top talent and jump-start their career at the critical postdoctoral stage. The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science program is one of many programs, in which AAAS is either a partner or sole administrator, dedicated to broadening participation for women in STEM. Applications for next year’s awards will open in December and close in January.
